5.0 out of 5 stars This cd rocks!!!!, December 3, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Something Wicked (Audio CD)
An album that is very impressive. Something Wicked has a whole sound that is very fresh and includes 2 new bandmates. I for one like the cover to Something Wicked with the circus clown painting tied to circus tent stakes. The title refers to a book about a "dark carnival" written by Ray Bradbury which is a horror novel. This album by Nuclear Assault came out in 1993 in the time of grunge and got overshadowed. Nuclear Assault's Something Wicked TOTALLY reminds me of a new release by a new band called Another Animal, which also has very fresh sound as well and follows on the same path as Something Wicked in its metal/rock roots. On top of that both album covers have that circus/zoo/entertainment feel as odd as that sounds have cool album covers. Every song on Something Wicked is great and this is an album that should not be overlooked as it was in the past. Very fresh metal and a must buy! Check out Another Animal as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well produced, lacks energy, December 23, 2010
This review is from: Something Wicked (MP3 Download)
Nuclear Assault was never the fastest, heaviest band, nor were they all that technical or innovative. They were just a strait up thrash band that had a lot of vitality. Nuclear Assault had probably reached their zenith on the album Handle With Care, before group turmoils had really taken it's toll and they released Out of Order. After that the band lost two long time integral members, so this album comes with a curiously different sound for the group, but not a bad one necessarily.

The biggest asset for this album is that it's exceptionally well produced. All the tracks are laid down with perfect timing, and a really great sound. Unfortunately the thundering juggernaut we get isn't the enraged viking storming the battlefield, but a big ogre that has lost its way. Songs tend to be at a much slower pace, but even in the up-tempo parts feel lethargic. The energetic quality that was one of Nuclear Assault's greatest assets just isn't there. That doesn't mean it's a bad album however. As some easy going hard hitting metal to listen to, it's decent, although the album does have a few clunkers (The Forge and Behind Glass Walls in particular, The Other End is just filler). Lyrically the album holds true with N.A.'s tradition of more politically minded lyrics. Also known for their trademark short fast songs, only one appears on this album - "Art".

From a historical perspective, this album came on the tails of when the thrash flame was starting to die out. Many groups were trying to evolve their sound to a new environment where record companies had convinced them no one wanted thrash anymore. Mainstay acts such as Exodus, Megadeth, Metallica (ugh, don't get me started on Metallica) just to name a few, were all trying something else and Nuclear Assault was no different. Keep in mind that groups that didn't try something else generally didn't fair any better. The next metal wave was yet to come but there was a dead spot for a few years and this type of album was a common attempt to evolve.

Glad that this album is available again myself. I have to admit that it was one of those tapes that made the rotation into my tape deck more often than many of the others. Overall, a good thrash effort, but it feels a bit lacking and lethargic.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Something Wicked (Audio CD)
I don't know why there are so many bad reviews about this album!!! Every song on this album is incredible. Yes they got two musicians on Something Wicked and they bring a new and superior sound to Nuclear Assault's table. It has awesome solos and plain/simple rock out. This album suffered like so many at this time...early 90's. Metallica epic self titled album was still reigning its crown and the Alternative music had huge stake in the rock community. Nuclear Assault suffered from sales and band member changes and still carried the metal torch. This album is strong and I disagree on the types negative of reviews. Listen to this album..its little different from Nuclear Assault's previous albums, but very worthy. Check this one out!!!
