Another winner from Patti Berg,
This review is from: Something Wild (Mass Market Paperback)
At the end of BORN TO BE WILD, we found Max Wilde discovering his sister had been found. In SOMETHING WILD, Charity Wilde, takes some R&R from Las Vegas' bright lights and heads to Wyoming to see Max, his wife Lauren and Jack and Sam Remington. She never expected to meet up again with Mike Flynn, the pastor who married Max and Lauren and whom Charity snubbed at the wedding reception. But meet again, they do, and when they do the sparks fly. Mike, a widower for 6 years & now the manager of Sam's ranch (and still a minister), has no intention of ever getting married again. Charity, out to prove to the world that showgirls can indeed be virtuous, has no intention of getting involved with any man. These good intentions are quickly put to the test with the help of Satan. But this Satan is a mustang bent on spiriting away two beautiful & quite expensive horses Jack planned on giving Sam as a gift. Mike is adamant about catching and taming Satan;Charity is just as adamant that some wild things should never be tamed. What ensues is a battle of wills and desire. Mike and Charity develop deep feelings for one another, yet neither is willing to take the final step and make the ultimate show of trust and sacrfice. SOMETHING WILD is a great follow-up to BORN TO BE WILD. The plot is fresh and very much believable; the characters are endearing and sympathetic. There's humor laced with poignancy as the hero and heroine battle their own personal demons as well as one four-legged one. The book left me eagerly anticipating the next one, Logan Wolfe's story. (Logan is Charity's friend in Vegas). For Valentine's Day, treat yourself to SOMETHING WILD.

Almost Five Stars,

This review is from: Something Wild (Mass Market Paperback)
For those of you out there who like romantic fiction but whose sensibilities are alerted by the preponderance of premarital bumping and grinding, this book is for you! The characters are believable with understandable frailties -- nothing too extreme or exotic -- and the author manages to craft a story that's not, in the words of my good friend, "too cartoony." The story reprises some characters from the books Wife for a Day and Stuck on You, but this particular story somehow achieves a more realistic and sensitive story, although it does contain its share of whimsy. The story concerns Chastity Wilde, Vegas showgirl, and Mike Flynn, a "cowboy preacher" whom she meets whilon a visit with her brother at his in-laws' ranch in Wyoming. Of course, the story itself is a classic case of "opposites attract," with the aforementioned twist of (gasp!) religious values as well as (ack!) a woman who has more on her mind than hooking up with a great guy. The character of Chastity in particular is well-drawn, moving gracefully through an (*passing out*) impressive learning curve as all good round characters should. I removed one star simply because I find Mike Flynn's personal crisis slightly -- just slightly -- over the top. He's mourning his first wife and dealing with some irrational sense of responsibility for her death. He's a sensitive man, of course, but he's also intelligent, and I found it hard to imagine that someone would carry around such a load of unjustified guilt for such a long time without figuring out what a waste of energy it is. While this book has prequels, I think it stands fine on its own. I enjoyed it more than I did its predecessors, and anyone yearning for a sweet story and (finally!) a couple who waits for holy matrimony really ought to check it out.

Something Wild was a great read!,

I am so glad that I decided to disregard my first inclination, and picked this book up. It has earned a place on my keeper shelf, without a doubt. The writing is superb, and while the story may be a little deep in the angst department a couple times, it all works out beautifully in the end. I know I shed more than a few tears while reading this, and it sent me digging up her backlist to reread, which includes characters you'll see in this book. If you're a fan of contemporary fiction, of any sort, don't miss this read!

I had really looked forward to the next book in Patti Berg's series. But apparently I missed something in this book because I wasn't at all impressed. You have minister Mike Flynn, struggling with guilt over his wife's death six years ago. Mike's attitude about sex outside of marriage is refreshing and his loneliness heart-breaking. Then you have Charity Wilde, virtous showgirl who wears practically nothing at her job & dances in ways bordering on obscene (her admissions). I'm not sure why she got so upset with Mike seeing her in the tub since she wasn't wearing much less than she did on stage. She decides what's best for a wild mustang. In the process she risks the lives of animals and human and nearly costs a man his life. I also found it hard to believe that any man, especially a minister, would laugh at the woman he loves crawling all over another man as part of her "act". And I'm not sure why or when Mike fell in love with her since all he ever thought about was how much he wanted to get her in bed. I found Charity to be self-involved, irresponsible and a less than endearing character. This won't however, stop me from reading the next book in the series. I still enjoy Patti Berg's books and trust the next will be better than this.

I Loved This Book!!!,

Charity and Mike are as different as they could be. Charity is a not so successful virgin Las Vegas Showgirl, Mike is a minister, ranch hand, cowboy. What more can you say. Charity goes to Wyoming for a family visit and runs into Mike Flynn and the sparks fly for both of them. Their story is a rollercoster ride of laughs as well as touching moments. You will see some old friends Lauren, Max, Sam, and Jack from other Pattie Berg Books. The nice thing about that is you don't have to have read Berg's other books to understand or enjoy this book. A must read.

The story is very similar to Sandra Brown's "Tempest for Eden". In that story, a minister (who is also widowed like Mike) falls in love with a nude model. That too is a story about two unlikely characters falling in love. Dont know which story was "inspired" by the other. Although I like Berg's story better. Hated Charity. Very self-centered and whiny.

Cute tale about Charity Wilde, she has unfulfilled dreams about wanting to be a Las Vegas Showgirl... that is until she meets the very handsome Mike Flynn. He's a rancher/minister (and widower) in Wyoming. The energy between Charity and Mike is incredible, but is it enough for her to want to give up her dreams? This story was great! It kept me on the edge of my seat and turning pages as fast as I could read them so I could find out if they get together or not. This was my 3rd Patti Berg book and I like how she repeats her characters and gives them their own book! Major kudos to her for that!

Time to write about a different family?,

I enjoyed Patti Berg's Wife For A Day a lot, and the sequel Born to Be Wild a little less than the first book. With Something Wild, the third book in the series, I'm hoping that Patti could write on a different group of people. By the time another book in the series comes out, most people would have forgotten about the secondary characters in the previous book.Don't get me wrong because I enjoyed reading this book about Charity and Mike. But writing about every secondary character ever appeared in the previous books can be pretty dull especially if readers are expected to remember who's who and what happened in a book that was read probably when it first came out the year before. Patti's next book is about Logan Wolfe, a secondary character in Something Wild mentioned maybe a total of half a dozen times. I'm sure it will work well as a stand-alone but it remains to be seen if Patti intends to include the whole Remington/Wilde/Flynn family into her latest book as well.

Amusing sequel,
This review is from: Something Wild (Mass Market Paperback)
They first met at the wedding of his brother, but neither Charity Wilde nor Mike Flynn felt any sparks. Both went on with their lives with Charity returning to Vegas in her efforts to become a headline showgirl and Mike to run his ranch. They meet again when Charity returns to Wyoming on a family visit at the Remington Ranch. This time an attraction engulfs both of them, but neither desires the unwanted feelings. Mike remains racked with guilt over his deceased wife and his caring for Charity increases his feelings of inadequacy. Charity's situation is a bit simpler as she does not want to give up her dream of stardom. Not even Cupid could hope to bring this couple together. SOMETHING WILD is a sequel to the fantastic WIFE FOR A DAY. Though the story line is as amusing as the latter novel, it lacks the social teeth of the first book. The tale is fun, engaging the reader through the two obstinate lead characters who want love and their dreams, but neither knows how to grab and hold onto the feelings. Patti Berg is quickly becoming a sure shot to provide strong entertainment for romance readers. Harriet Klausner |
