Because the fishmonger has been thrown into deep gloom, the girl decides to solve the crime herself; she takes an apparently nonsensical note left by the thief to her brilliant and strange friend Yak to be decoded and, in her inimitably offbeat way, tracks down the culprit. In the process, she discovers a secret about Mr. Petrusca–he can't read, a situation that Hazel decides to remedy. This sequel to Hazel Green (Bloomsbury, 2003) sparkles with crisp dialogue and clear-cut characters, but it is the girl's intense interest in the people around her and her joy in interacting with them that provides warmth and depth.
