Book Description

July 2000
Sometimes, Enough Is Enough

In the early eighties, pioneering educator and author Marsha Sinetar helped revolutionize the way we thought about work. Now, using her own progressively reflective life as a template, she speaks simply and deeply to those who seek spiritual wholeness. She recasts the ancient spiritual tradition of contemplation for contemporary, highly technological times.

Sinetar first reminds us of our innate longing for spiritual comfort. She proposes no less than a sweeping change and an upgrade of our lifestyle along a timeless route -- gradual, relaxed asceticism, or the "casual contemplative" way, by which almost all of us can rightly order our lives. Her discussion of what it might mean to design a prayerful life is meant to move its from a constricted, pressured mentality to the worshipful harmony of what mystics, metaphysicians, and the monastic tradition call unitive consciousness.

At the heart of Sinetar's vision is a wholesale lifestyle change. Daily devotion is a must. So is the cultivation of classical monastic practices. What we are extinguishing is our distracted attitude of worship, which seeks to obey the letter of the law but is divorced from our sacred ground of being. With an intimate look at her own life, and using everyday illustrations, Sinetar proves her point -- almost anyone can rightly order a life.

In her clear and uncompromising voice, Marsha Sinetar advocates a true traditional pilgrimage but with a modern flavor. For those who are struggling to achieve a balanced life and still fulfill family and work obligations, and for all those who think they are too busy to engage in such loftypastimes, Sinetar suggests, think again. "Put simply, state of mind, not material circumstance, creates your states of harmony, assurance, and comfort. Put simplest, with a few adjustments, you can bloom spiritually, right where you're planted."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Author of the bestselling classic Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow and other spirituality titles, Sinetar points the way toward becoming a "casual contemplative" who connects with the Divine through informal "nonmonastic" practices of meditation and awareness. Drawing upon the Bible and other sources including Ram Dass, G.K. Chesterton, John Muir and Thomas Merton, she encourages readers to walk the spiritual walk with their unique gait. This slim volume expands on only a few simple principlesAincluding cultivating solitude and inner-directedness, spending time in natural surroundings and focusing on prayer and meditationAsupplemented with exercises for practicing them. Her declaration that "enough is enough" refers to the many experiences that she believes one must abandon in order to pursue the contemplative life: abusive relationships, the quest for material wealth, anxiety and excessive busyness. Sinetar also suggests that readers untangle themselves from people, places and things that distract from "paying attention to the inmost Spirit on a second-by-second basis." Learning to say yes and no clearly, she argues, marks spiritual maturity and provides the elusive comfort that everyone craves. That comfort, she stresses in this concise and worthy manual, is only found when "our enjoyments affirm destiny's call" and "our material goals...support our spiritual aims." (July)

From Library Journal

Sinetar, corporate adviser and author of Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow, has written an entry-level manual for the spiritual life. Her ideas and thoughts hope to show how to achieve, with economy of means, a state of mind reflective, observant, considerate of eternal things. Some readers may find her work insufficiently disciplined, but many will welcome its gentle insights. Recommended.

This review is from: Sometimes Enough Is Enough: Spiritual Comfort in a Material World (Hardcover)
What I enjoyed from Marsha Sinetar's book is the way in which she brings affirmation and welcome to a potential 'slow down' in ones life. I believe that which many of us long for and do not recognize in our 'rush here, get there, do this' lifestyle ... is breathing room. Marsha gives validation to creating space in ones life for mere nothingness. She offers her readers numerous pictures of what personal sanctuary can look like on an average day, when honored. And she bridges the imagined space between taking moments for selfcare ... with nurturing treasured relationships with others. I felt so validated and affirmed in my quest for making sacred everyday moments. I also received insight and support in choosing to say "no" more often, thus releasing the guilt and paranoia that has rendered previous "no's" unactualized. I celebrate Marsha Sinetar's work .. she gifts me with each and every writing. I am consistantly changed!
