This review is from: Sometimes It Makes You Wonder (Hardcover)
This is the second book from a humble country veterinarian. Dr. Orzeck describes the situations and circumstances in his experience as an animal caretaker that left him [ and the reader ] with a sense of awe and wonder. He discusses animal behaviors that he cannot explain, such as watching an Indian chief " spiritually" guide his herd of bison home. Dr. Orzeck also details the actions that people take in the name of the human - animal bond. These range from the bizarre, such as an African tribal leader cutting a cow's ear to cure its diarrhea, to the unexplainable, such as the home remedies people employ to cure their pets of fleas. Dr. Orzeck discusses other experiences in this regard, which have arisen from blissful ignorance to emotional denial and everything in between. His regard for animal welfare comes through strongly, mixed with equal portions of frustration, sadness and lament for the things his has seen. The book ends on a high note with a discussion of the human - animal bond. Dr. Orzeck might be considered a contemporary American James Heriott. This book will be enjoyed by people who want an actual glimpse into the life of a country veterinarian.
