Book Description

March 20, 2009 0982206704 978-0982206706 2nd
"When I finished reading Sometimes My Heart Pushes My Ribs I had to go to lunch with people in a restaurant with enormous beverages and misnamed sandwiches. I kept tapping my hand on the table and I didn t listen to anything anybody said. All I wanted to do was go home to read and write the kind of poetry Ellen Kennedy writes, declarative and nervous and wild and free. This is the sort of thing you want. This is the sort of book you should buy and you should buy it now instead of having lunch with those 'friends.' "
-Daniel Handler, author of Adverbs

"[A]bsurd...melancholic...feature[s] poems about nervousness, loneliness, Woody Allen, and Norm MacDonald."
- Nylon Magazine

"20-year old Ellen Kennedy's Sometimes My Heart Pushes My Ribs is a gorgeous collection dealing with awkwardness, sex, fragility, affection and prosaic flights of fantasy in which Woody Allen is 'outed' and a lost manatee orbits Earth."
- Plan B

"She's in control of the power of the ordinary. The kind of poet you want to meet after reading."
- David Ohle, author of Motorman and The Age of Sinatra

"The whole book made me want to type in lower-case letters and chase around aging icons of Hollywood, trying to f-ck them."
- FREEwilliamsburg

"Abject hopelessness, awkward fumbling, and gentle anomie rarely feel so touching and funny as they do in the hands of Ellen Kennedy"
- Kathleen Rooney, Octopus Magazine

"It's simply brilliant and funny and sad, but sweetly so."
- Todd Colby, author of Tremble and Shine

"There's a kind of prose poetry that Ellen Kennedy has tapped into. It seems familiar if you've read Roland Barthes or Jim Carroll, and yet it is nothing like either."
- Fanzine

"Each line and sentence is laid bare as it wheels within a vortex of emotionless/emotional juxtapositions; there is nothing that distracts the reader, nothing that pulls the reader away from the page."
- Lee Rourke, 3:AM Magazine

"[A] moving lament of the disconnect between how we want to treat each other and how the world wants us to treat each other."
- Chris Tonelli, Open Letters Monthly

5.0 out of 5 stars no, February 6, 2011

I think this collection is both refreshing and unpretentious. The only downside in my opinion is its short length for the price.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment, August 5, 2010
This review is from: Sometimes My Heart Pushes My Ribs (Paperback)
I learned of this book when the first edition was out of print and the second edition wasn't yet available. After reading the jacket review I was really excited to own a copy and when the second edition became available I bought it immediately. I was hugely disappointed. I am a big fan of Tao Lin's poetry which is how I heard of Ellen Kennedy in the first place, but I was angered and almost shocked to see how clearly she copies Lin's work and style. She even goes so far as to co-opt characteristic phrases and subject matter that as far as I know originated with and are unique to Lin. The only way she goes about distinguishing herself is with the addition of a few extremely vulgar descriptions of various bodily functions. I'm no prude, but the way she handles it is cheap and obvious. I would not recommend this book to anyone, but especially not to someone who enjoys poetry and prose in the style of Tao Lin, because you'll feel cheated, not pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars i like every time i read this book, December 14, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sometimes My Heart Pushes My Ribs (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book of poetry/short stories. The entries are mostly sad, sometimes funny, and often moving. Any young adult can relate to Ellen Kennedy's style of writing that consistently mixes the banal and the intriguing aspects of life.

My favorite poem in the book begins with: "i wish my life consisted only of riding my bike with you." I was able to relate many of her lines to my own life in both good and bad ways, which is what made reading it so interesting to me.

My only dislike is the short length, I was finished reading this book in 20 minutes and immediately wanted more.
