Book Description

May 1, 2009
Already a sensation in the UK and winner of the prestigious 2008 Design & Art Direction award for outstanding achievement in illustration and book design, Sara Fanelli's Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Am is an extraordinary new creation, a book unlike any other.

Known for her often-imitated, never duplicated experimental techniques, renowned illustrator Fanelli finds inspiration not only in the visual arts but also in literature and theater. From Dante and Goethe to Calvino and Beckett, Fanelli draws on her favorite quotations and aphorisms to create a work of utter originality, previously unpublished sketches, collages, paintings, and drawings, at the heart of which lies a beautiful miniature book-within-a-book.

Famed art director Steven Heller provides an illuminating introduction while critic Marina Warner introduces each of the book's five chapters, "Devils and Angels," "Love," "Color," "Myth," and "The Absurd." Eclectic, dynamic, and full of creative energy, Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Am speaks to the power of inspiration and the capacity for books to embody it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fanelli's creation is a revelation, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Am (Paperback)
I turned to Sara Fanelli's latest book with great interest because I have so enjoyed many of her illustrated children's books such as Dear Diary, First Flight,Pinocchio, and others. I was amazed -- it is a totally new departure ....and yet still so suffused with Fanelli's utterly distinctive personality. It is a book for adults and the concept is engagingly simple. Fanelli illustrates short quotations from world literature, and the philosophers, wits and thinkers of many cultures. These are grouped into broad categories which gives a sense of structure within the book.
Every conceivable mood and emotion is evoked and the exuberance of Fanelli's gloriously creative imagination colours the darkest as well as the liveliest and most joyful images. There is a marvellous book within a book within the book and you feel as if you are holding a precious artefact in your hands over and above the compelling images it contains. This is a book to return to again and again ... and is THE perfect gift.

I think I'm a fan of her earlier work, and the most current books just aren't for me. It was dark and too creepy for me. I miss the old Sara. I tried.
