"When a horse is right for the owner, a precious bond . . . a very real form of love . . . emerges from the response of one to the other." Every horsewoman's life journey has a unique destination. Some earn the winner's circle; others simply enjoy a wooded trail. Whatever the ambition, it's the wonderful partnership of horse and rider that gives any journey true joy. This personal story goes beyond the "how to" of finding partnership with a horse. Horse owners will find valuable insight on their challenges and responsibilities. Readers will share the excitement of a competitive trail ride. They will also learn about Sally Swift and the amazing influence of her basic riding principles. Most important of all, readers will share the author's discovery of a life-changing spiritual message within the horse and rider experience. It is a message of God's love, of the essence of part-nership with a horse and with God . . . and the many parallels between horse training and Christian discipleship!
I grew up on an Iowa farm, where we used a team of horses. My first riding horse, as a young girl, was a Percheron mare, 1600 pound size. I've always had a love of horses, perhaps fueled by my grandpa's horse stories. He had been a professional blacksmith and trained his own horses.
When my oldest son wanted a 4-H horse project, we bought Fanny, who became the first horse I really owned and trained. Her story was my first book, Sometimes a Woman Needs a Horse, which recently won First Runnerup in the Legacy Nonfiction category of the Eric Hoffer Awards for 2009.
I collected stories for my second book, MARES! (ya gotta love em) which was published in 2008.
I now own 3 horses, a mare and two geldings. I write a monthly column for the Illinois Horse Network newspaper, under the heading, Sometimes God Uses Horses. My website is www.goduseshorses.com. I welcome emails or other communication from other horses owners, especially about mares and experiences with mares.
