I love books that span several years of a characters life without making me live through the mundane bits, but also don't feel like something has been left out. The author writes these characters with heart-breaking poignancy and unsqueamish honesty. Some scenes are so real I could almost swear I went through the same thing, had the same conversation, felt the same feelings when I was in high school and college.

Each character has a complete and natural voice, a feat that can be hard to accomplish when writing from an unfamiliar perspective. In this story, the viewpoints move seamlessly and beautifully, and ultimately end up in a place where each needs to be.

I literally could not put this story down. And it made me cry. In public. I didn't even care. It was totally necessary.

I have to say I'm pretty fanatical about reading. When I get a good book I can't put it down and will stay up all night to read it. I'll even sneak and read at work or whenever I can get a spare second. I was like that with this book. I could not put it down! I was fascinated by the stories of the main characters and fully invested in them both. I loved the way the author changed the tone of the language to match where each character was in life. I would have loved to read more about Melissa's "characters". The only negative is that the book was over before I was ready for it to be. But that's my fault for being a nut about reading good stories.

When you are given the unexpected, it is called a gift. I owned Jason Gilmore's book for two months before I opened it. As I started reading, I felt Gilmore was writing a screen play that was converted to a book. I kept reading and as I did, Melissa and Corey's story turned into something I did not expect; a wonderful story that is as clear as watching television and as in depth as a nice, thick book!

Melissa and Corey's journey towards adulthood and fulfillment is supported by strong characters that really enhance the story without overwhelming, "Somewhere Between Here and There" is a homerun hit in Gilmore's first novel that encompasses family, relationships, sexuality, religion, and love in an empowering flow captivating the reader for 332 pages.

I strongly recommend this book for book clubs and also for youth. As a non-youth myself, Gilmore's novel hit on situations in my own life that foretells that we ALL must travel the same road called adulthood. Expect the unexpected in `Somewhere.' Well done Mr. Gilmore. Lifetime movies needs this story.

This book is the type you can reread a couple times and be amazed each time. Which I will do. You love the Michelle and Corey and you don't even know what they look like. I grew with them. I felt compassion for them and could relate to them so very well. Thanks Jason Gilmore for an amazing addition to my book collection.
