5.0 out of 5 stars Long time fan still blown away
This is a wonderful, understated record. I keep thinking Exene has found her most beautiful voice on this recording. And I've loved her voice since the first X album. Lou Whitney [Missouri roots rock legend] has done a deft job of production here. 5 stars indeed all the way!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I bought this album because I heard Exene perform at SXSW last year. The album just doesn't come close to what they sounded like live. I listened to it a few times, but it's heading for the exchange pile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three "E's" Exene, Emmylou, and Ella, November 5, 2009
This review is from: Somewhere Gone (Audio CD)
What a great, great, CD! I should live with it for awhile before commenting, but anything from Exene is greatly appreciated. I always welcome any new music from the three "E's" Exene, Ella Fitzgerald, and Emmylou Harris...my 3 all-time favorite vocalists.

That's how "Somewhere Gone" succeeds for me. Seems to me that Exene has always had a loose, free-spirited, "jazz" vibe, when it comes to music...like Ella. And then too, Exene has the integrity, songwriting ability, and spirit of an Emmylou Harris. Of course, Exene Cervenka is unique, and her music isn't much like Ella's or Emmy's at all.

Exene Cervenka just operates at that high a level.

Exene never ceases to amaze me with her talent. This latest album really showcases that gorgeous voice of hers. She has been one of my top 5 favorite vocalists ever since I first heard X, over 25 years ago. I adore her and I adore this album!

OK, my wife read an article about Exenes comeback and encouraged me to buy the CD. I thought it would be punk. You know Iggy is still doing good. Actually the music is more folk and blue grass. If it was good I would still be quite happy. However the songs sound like they are not fully developed yet. They are very sparse. The singing is the worst part. She just doesn't have much singing talent. The songs are talk sung. Eric Burden, Patti Smith and others have had great songs using that method, but here you have no emotive nuances that make it work. She drags and slowly enunciates each syllable in the same tone on each line and in every song. I found half the songs to be totally boring and the other half to be somewhat interesting. Some of the music has potential to be further developed into good songs, and with a good singer successful ones. I've listened to the CD about five times and it doesn't get any better. The title track and the ending track are the best. This CD will go onto my gambled and lost money pile. For Exene devotees only.
