5.0 out of 5 stars a classic from a classy lady.... August 12, 2000
Format:Audio CD
This sophomore effort from Phyllis Hyman is full of songs that capture her haunting alto voice, especially the Barry Manilow produced "Somewhere In My Lifetime", an achingly beautiful ballad that will make you a fan for life. Other soulful ballads include "The Answer Is You", a story of love found, finally, and "Be Careful", a sexy warning to treat her right. "Gonna Make Changes" reflects Phyllis' social views, and is a straight up anthem for bettering the world. More upbeat are "So Strange" where she growls and scats and whispers, and "Looking for a Loving", an infectious dance tune, and "Living Inside Your Love", another dance tune with a hint of the islands. Phyllis shows she can rock with the best of them with "Kiss You All Over", an old Exile tune that she transforms with a sexy soulful turn. "Soon Come Again" is a plea for returned love that she elevates to pure pop. But my favorite tune here is a beautiful jazz standard, "Here's That Rainy Day", a song perfectly suited to Phyllis. It captures her passion, her inflection, her perfect diction and she wraps her voice around it and simply OWNS the song. This body of work is rare and precious and a must for anyone who appreciates the finest of female vocalists. Phyllis is no longer with us, but with this CD you can hear her, young and eager and in fine voice. Part of a precious legacy of music she left for us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second Time Around December 7, 2000
Format:Audio CD
Phyllis Hyman heralds a triumphant return with her sophomore effort. Although currently available as an import compact disc, perhaps Arista/BMG will soon consider a U.S. re-release. After her first effort, her previous record label, Buddah Records, was acquired by Arista. Many of the songs on her second effort had been recorded during her sessions with Buddah. As a result, Phyllis continued to soar upon the divinity that she established on her first album. She successfully retains her conviction, integrity, and flavorings throughout while bestowing her repertoire with additional priceless treasures.
"Kiss You All Over" opens the set and finds the Sophisticated Lady crooning her soulful rendition of the song originally performed by Exile. In the process, she makes the tune all her own as she confidently expresses her loving affection. The mid-tempo approach to the song compliments her conviction, vocal delivery and intentions.
In an arrangement with Arista, Barry Manilow produced the title track "Somewhere In My Lifetime" and Phyllis later shared her vocals on his 1987 "Swing Street" album. The resulting collaboration with Barry produced this dramatic big band ballad, proving once again that Phyllis can effortlessly commiserate with many genres of music and retain her artistic integrity. Bask in the delight of the big band brass...even it cannot smother the sheer power of her voice. Her vocal prowess is commanding and filled with conviction that will not be denied. It remained a curtain closer during her live performances of the time.
A true quiet storm offering comes in the form of "The Answer Is You," an enchanting, delicate ballad filled with lush orchestration. The song was featured in the feature film "Set It Off," further testifying to its captivating appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great remastering of a classic Hyman album December 22, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I really am thrilled that almost all of Phyllis Hyman's actual albums have been released remastered over the past few years. Phyllis was such an amazing songstress who possessed amazing range and emotive ability. There was no song she couldn't give her own interpretation to. She just opened her mouth and that magical voice flowed effortlessly. The tragic end of her life so early was such a loss and over the past decade there have been many collections. Believe me they are essential but they started to become a little repetetive and started to have a haunting sadness to them. Now with all the actual albums being released us Hyman fans can truly be completists and have all tracks Phyllis performed as well as enjoy the musical journey she took as she grew from album to album.

SOMEWHERE IN MY LIFETIME was her second album and it truly introduced classic Phyllis Hyman. There are many staples here that are all exsquite examples of her artistry such as the title track, THE ANSWER IS YOU, GONNA MAKE CHANGES, BE CAREFUL (HOW YOU TREAT MY LOVE) and LIVING INSIDE YOUR LOVE. It is amazing that there is so much classic Phyllis on only her second solo effort. There are also many musical treats here. Her take on KISS YOU ALL OVER is very sensual and as you read the extensive liner notes you will see she tackled this before it had even become a hit. She provides a light jazzy take on SOON COME AGAIN and HERE'S THAT RAINY DAY is sung with raw, sincere emotion. SO STRANGE is a great uptempo track.

The later albums in her career did take on a haunting sadness that listening to them now it seems the listener can hear the emotional struggle going on inside Phyllis.

5.0 out of 5 stars ~Sophisicated soul classic~Bravo Phyllis! December 1, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Phyllis Hyman started her amazing recording career on sheer strength of remarkable talent shining brightly through amazing small club appearances, lines of captivated fans going around the block brought numerous major label offers with Phyllis Hyman going for small label Buddah Records in hopes of having greater creative control. Upon limited release of second album, small label went under being bought up by major label Arista Records, as luck would have it for the sultry soulful Diva her contract was picked up but sophomore effort quickly drawn back then reworked to "Somewhere In My Lifetime" form, end result very satisfying showcase of everything the great singer does best, soulful rhythm & ballad gems along with hot dance tracks making for a smooth mix creating sophisicated forrunner to "Quiet Storm" format.
Various reissues happened over the years of "Somewhere In My Lifetime" in Compact Disc form, new 2013 SoulMusic Records features sublime remastering with fascinating liner notes chronicling interesting happenings like tension created by label acquisition during original issue of this stellar album by Phyllis Hyman, one of the greatest singers ever from an era where real talent reigned supreme, captivating bonus tracks wonderful extended mixes of dance tracks "So Strange" & catchy mesmerizing opener "Kiss You All Over" being totally infectious. Other bonus tracks in this majestic issue are three wonderful songs dropped by Arista Records from originally titled "Sing A Song" Lp, quite a gripping story in liner note story about a phenomenal singer who had to adjust to unwanted changes in this early stage of her extraordinary recording career that was way too short...
