A great introduction to ocean creatures,
By "anonymous20" (The Olympic Coast) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Somewhere in the Ocean (Hardcover)
I use this book as part of a children's program in Olympic National Park. It has several things going for it: the illustrations are beautiful; the rhyming is fun and engaging; each creature is introduced with an action; and it allows children and adults to readily relate through some universal concepts (like parent-child relationships, shelter, safety, playing, etc.). People from around the U.S. as well as from other continents enjoy and connect with this book. We talk about the animals in the story and discuss the meanings of any unfamiliar words during the program. Perhaps children reading this book outside of a ranger program would be inspired to find their meanings independently, and discover more about our dynamic oceans.

Crabs, whales & sharks...oh my!,
By Kalan (lexington, KY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Somewhere in the Ocean (Hardcover)
A rhyming counting story that makes us want to sing. The pages are bursting with color, mommy sea creatures swimming with their babies. The book introduces all kinds of sea creatures: Whales, fish, otters, crabs, sharks, seahorses, jellyfish & more. Utterly enjoyable for me as well as my 3 year old.

Huge hit with my 6-year-old!,
This review is from: Somewhere in the Ocean (Hardcover)
My son checked this book out from his school library last week and we read it many times since. This morning he woke me up at 5:30 crying because he loves this story so much and doesn't want to have to return it to his school. Needless to say, we ordered the book for home. We love the fun rhyme and bright, engaging illustrations. My son also loves when I use the same rhyming pattern/song to continue the story using his and his brother's names and activities. Love this book!

Beloved classroom book,

I teach a K-2 special education classroom and we are reading this book daily and doing a little dance to it to prepare for an upcoming school presentation. The kids love the rhyming and colorful pictures; I love covering math and science content. I am particularly pleased with the accuracy of the terminology, such as: a "raft" of otters and a "father" seahorse, these are all great details that as an educator I really appreciate. We have been reading it every day for the last month and my kids never get sick of it and are now saying it along with me at each reading.

A Wonderful and Beautiful Book!,
By Gwen P. (Douglassville, PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Somewhere in the Ocean (Hardcover)
What a wonderful and beautiful book! I love everything about this book! As a scuba diver, I've seen many of these creatures in the ocean. Kenneth did a great job at capturing their beauty. My kids and I appriciate how "friendly" all of the sea creatures are and the rhythmic pace of the words. An extra special bonus are the hidden numbers in each of the pictures! Both of my daughters fight over who can find the numbers first! It's far beyond a regular "counting book". It's a good little story as well. There is no way you can go wrong purchasing this book. It's a great book for the toddler age up 'til age six - though my eight year old always stops what she's doing to come and sit beside me while I read it to her little sister!

Sarah and Rebecca's book review,
By A Customer
This review is from: Somewhere in the Ocean (Hardcover)
Sarah (9 yrs old): This book was a great book but it had some very hard words in it. Even for me as a 9-year-old, it had some words that I couldn't understand. Overall, though, it was a great book. Rebecca (6 yrs old): I like finding the numbers and it was a little hard for me as a 6-year-old. I like how the book rhymed.

This is a lovely happy sea tale and is so much fun to read to young ones because it can be sung to a very simple tune. A happy experience for both reader and listener.

Great story to read aloud,
By Stephanie (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Somewhere in the Ocean (Hardcover)
This is a great book to read aloud to and with kids. The rhymes have great rhythm, the pictures are good, and there is counting to boot.
We actually wore out our first copy. We had to buy another one so we could keep reading it! |
