Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know' is a catchy record that approaches true grandeur. Its melodies are memorable and it builds to some thrilling crescendoes. Its song structure is odd (two verses, then two alternating choruses) and the lead singer has a high, Freddy Mercury sort of charisma. The production is clean, if overly digital sounding. I recommend this one song by Keane. The rest of their stuff seems less memorable to me, but this one is a keeper.

I've been looking to get this CD specifically for "Walnut Tree", because it is so hard to find. The other b-side, "Snowed Under", is just as good! Definitely worth the money if you can find the single for relatively cheap.

Up front, I'll just say that I am not wild about Under the Iron Sea, and I regard Spiralling with extreme suspicion. So why am I reviewing a Keane single? Quite simply because Hopes and Fears was a magnificent album, an almost perfect pop masterpiece. Tom's voice was pure and soaring, the piano was crisp and clean, and there was endless amounts of wistful lovelorn hope. Somewhere only we know came out prior to Hopes and fears, and it contains some real surprises. "Somewhere only we know" itself is a great track, but familiar to all who have the album. The other songs, Walnut Tree and Snowed in are both classics. Snowed Under is good enough to have been a lead single from an album on its own right; Walnut Tree is a poppy but somewhat sad down-tempo vibe filled song, once more wtih a memorable melody and chorus that makes you want to take Tom aside and reassure him that things will be ok for him! The lack of inclusion of these two tracks on the album has always been a puzzlement to me, and is probably a testament to the very productive time that they were having during these sessions.

If you love that original sound and are less enthusiastic about the darker turn that the boys have taken on Under the Iron Sea, then rush out and get this fantastic little single. If you dislike melodic pop, well produced and sung, then better stay away from this one.

The trio may not be the most glamorous,rather far from this appellation,but they can make some genuinely meaningful and good music. "Somewhere Only We Know" is a superb track and the lyrics well complement the tune. What is really exquisite about Keane and their songs is their ability to avccomplish their work with passion and conviction. Nowadays several new bands---most of them just plain rubbish--- are croping up like mushrooms in monsoon and it's massively refreshing to a music lover that there's still a band left who pay due attension to songs with moral and poetic implications. "Somewhere Only We Know" is a slow-tempo track that is packed,and packed powerfully,with meaning,passion and a dry regret.

Yet another single from up-and-coming indie band, Keane, "Somewhere Only We Know" is another fine song featuring melodic piano playing and the sweet falsetto of vocalist Tom Chaplin. These guys remind me of Travis (circa "The Man Who") not Coldplay as the other reviewer incorrectly suggested. But the fact that they use no guitars give them a more unique sound then either of those bands.

What I like about this song is that it seems more assured then the previous also-excellent "Everybody's Changing". That song sounded more like the work of a one-hit wonder, while "Somewhere Only We Know" sounds like a band that has already been producing great records for a long time.

The only negative is that they keep releasing singles...now that they've signed with a major label, let's see a full length album!

sound more likely to Coldplay, but Coldplay is far better then them. Somewhere Only We Knew is a nice song but its not worthed to spend your money to buy this CD

hi! can anyone PLEASE tell me if this cd single for the VIDEO somewhere only we know, which version is it? try to describe it as much as possible...there's one in a green forest that has played on VH1 with a wrecked city that builds again by computer graphics and the other video they come out of building, get into car and go into a dead forest with computer animated miniature monster beings/people with flashing red hearts that look like theyre out of nightmare before christmas the movie....people explain clearly which video it is. thank you!

Well, Somewhere Only We Know is a great single to start off and it gets better and better with every listen. It's definitely worthy being on your play list even if you are a fan of indie rock or notwhen you want to chill or mellow out.

The other reviewer said that Keane sounded like Coldplay but they actually sound more like Scottish band Travis. Nevetherless, i still think Travis will always reign supreme having provided us with such great songs like Why does in always rain on me, Writing to reach you, Turn and Driftwood among others. Great effort by the boys of Keane though :)

Who says that. Are you trying to prove your music superiority over other reviewers? Who cares man. Don't tell people you are postmodern.
