Editorial Reviews

This double-disc set not only collects early singles, later compilation tracks, covers, and demos, but also two different versions of their crucial and long out of print 1993 debut, Background. Disc one's version has been completely remixed, and it foreshadows the tight, loud, and exuberant sound that would come to define the band. Disc two presents the album in all of its original glory, complete with the bonus live set, and now remastered for collectors. For fans of Descendents, Gorilla Biscuits, Kid Dynamite, Dag Nasty, and Embrace. Jade Tree. 2006.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Look To The Past August 14, 2006
By Brian
Format:Audio CD
I would like to start this review by stating that this is NOT new Lifetime, as another reviewer stated - this is a collection of Lifetime from their earlier eps/lps and unreleased versions of songs from their latter Jersey's Best Dancers days. With that in mind, this is a great collector's piece for any fan of the band. It gives you a strong foundation to where the band started and you can really bring the evolution of Lifetime to a whole. Recommended for fans of Husker Du, Dag Nasty, Jawbreaker, Kid Dynamite

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to J. Torrento.... February 4, 2007
Format:Audio CD
He does not know what he is talking about. This is not a new Lifetime album. It is a collection of old ep's, cover songs and different versions of old tracks. It is a must for people who don't have all the old stuff and want to hear how the band started out. Do some research dude. The new album drops this Feb.

3.0 out of 5 stars See the rest of their catalog instead May 29, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I have been listening to Lifetime for ten years, and consider Hello Bastards and NJ's Best Dancers amongst my favorite albums. They have simply put together songs that span indie and punk with more honesty and angst better than any band I have ever heard.

But unfortunately I cannot say the same for the new album (and first in many years), Somewhere in the Swamps of NJ. The only songs on it I feel are worthy of comparison to their best work are the title track and three borrowed from NJ's Best... The new stuff sounds like Ari and the group have really made some attempts to evolve, but instead range from metal riffs to emo romance songs without any trace of the magic they once had, and the songs borrowed from the early EP Background are heralded but are not as complete and effective as those on Hello adn NJ's Best.

Real fans will (and should) buy this to satisfy their Lifetime jonze and get 2 CDs for 15 bucks, but new and interested listeners should instead check out Hello Bastards or New Jersey's Best Dancer's, both fantastic albums and truly amongst the best rock the 1990s had to offer.
