More About the Author

In the month of February 1982 I wrote and sold my first novel. And no, I wouldn't believe it either if it hadn't happened to me. I sent in my manuscript on Thursday February 21, 1982 and four days later the telephone rang and I heard the amazing words, "We want to buy your book." How I wish you could have seen me. I was standing by the kitchen door of our North Babylon house, the picture of cool sophistication, as I listened to Vivian Stephens explain the terms of the deal to me. You would have thought I'd sold a first book every single day of my life. Yes, I said. Sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for calling. I look forward to our association. That cool sophistication hung on until I hung up the phone, took a deep breath, then promptly threw up on my shoes.

I was thirty-one years old, unagented, unschooled, unfamiliar with anything to do with the business of publishing. To put it mildly, I was in shock. My husband was working in Manhattan at the time (and finishing up his degree at night) so it would be hours until I could break the news to him. This was too exciting to waste on a phone call. I wanted to see his face when I told him that my dream had finally come true -- and came with a $6000 advance!

He pulled into the driveway at midnight. I was waiting in the doorway, holding a bottle of champagne and two glasses. I didn't have to say a word. He knew right away and the look of joy and pride in his eyes warms me now, years later, long after the advance faded into memory.

3.0 out of 5 stars Realistic heroine, March 19, 2002
This review is from: Somewhere In Time (Paperback)
Heroine: a strapping young woman

Dashing Zane Rutledge hadn't planned on crossing paths again with his beautiful ex-wife, but had no choice when the passing of his last-remaining relative left him in the possession of one Revolutionary War uniform. A uniform which none other than American History buff Emilie Crosse was best qualified to examine.

Emilie hadn't seen her jet-setting ex in five years, but clearly he still had the ability to make her spine tingle just by walking into a room. Her greatest regret was that their brief marriage was grounded only in their physical attraction to each other, that their wants and desires for their lives were such polar opposites of each other.

Swept back through time by an unusual storm, the unlikely pair find themselves in the middle of an uprising: the colonies are about to declare their Independence from Britain. A stunned Emilie meets childhood hero Andrew McVie in the flesh, discovering that he has the wants and desires of any other man. And that his wants are a mirror of her own. Emilie must decide between the man of her own time whom she once loved but couldn't live with, and a man of the past who could give her the home she always longed for.

What worked for me:
I always enjoy a good time-travel story. I think it's fascinating to see how modern-day people struggle to get by in a world unlike their own. Emilie was an interesting lady and I sympathized with her situation.

What didn't work for me:
Zane was handsome, but shallow. Yes, his character did grow as the story moved along but he still had a long way to go even by the end of the book.

Overall:
Very pleasant book, but if you are a fan of novels rich in historical detail then this is not the book for you. While it is set in colonial America, there wasn't much mention of how people lived.

This is the first book of a trilogy. The next book deals with secondary character Andrew McVie and his experiences in the future, which I hope to read in my own near future. :^)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Time Travel I Ever Read!, November 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Somewhere In Time (Paperback)
This is the one. I read it for the first time six years ago and never forgot it. I re-read it this weekend and what can I say? It's better than I remembered. Intelligent. Sexy. Thought-provoking. Deeply moving. A keeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zane & Emelie....., January 13, 2012
This review is from: Somewhere in Time (Hardcover)
I gave this book 4 stars because the overall story was interesting, but I find it highly unlikely that a man like Zane Grey Rutledge would choose to live in the past rather than in the present, mainly because he lacked for nothing, and, being the sort of jerk that he was, was too spoiled to give up the good life. Even for Emelie.

Emelie kept saying 'women are equal to men' yet everytime Zane yelled at her or told her to 'shut up' she remained quiet as a mouse. Really, she should have smacked him. He really did treat her badly. Thank goodness all the other characters around him were interesting; otherwise I wouldn't have finished the book.
