a golden nugget shining brightly !!!,

This review is from: Somewhere in Time (Audio CD)
Somewhere In Time is a very good Donny Osmond album of cover songs that showcases his talents very nicely. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very well done. This is one CD that should please Donny Osmond fans. True, it doesn't have as many songs on it as I would have liked--but then again it doesn't claim to be a "greatest hits" compilation either.
"Without You" is an excellent cover of this song that Donny sings with heart and soul. His tenor voice is great and the parts of this ballad that he sings in falsetto also work rather well. The music is very pretty and "Without You" is a strong beginning for this album. In addition, Donny does a smash-up job on "I Can't Go For That;" "I Can't Go For That" has a funky melody and Donny sings this to perfection with some awesome music special effects and a solid backup chorus to embellish this number. There's also Donny doing another great job on "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love'" "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" features Donny Osmond squarely front and center and I'm very impressed! Donny's rendition is better than the original in my opinion! "Don't Dream It's Over" shines brightly when Donny Osmond sings this with panache; the melody is mellow and very pretty. I really like "Don't Dream It's Over;" and I predict that you'll like Donny's rendition of this classic love song if you haven't heard it already. There's also "After The Love Is Gone;" this tune has excellent percussion to mark the beat and Donny delves into this ballad in order to bat it straight out of the ballpark! "After The Love Is Gone" is easily a major highlight of this CD. "I'm Not In Love" has a chorus that is quite similar to the one in the original version; and when Donny sings this the number takes off like a jet! Donny never misses a beat and he never sings a superfluous note, either! Great! "Puppy Love" is a number Donny himself sang with his family so many years ago--the guitar treatment works very well and this is quite moving. "So Happy Together" gets a regal treatment from Donny; he puts his own stamp on this number by using a slower tempo and adding a few subtle key changes to enhance it and make this his own. "Don't Give Up On Us Baby" is equally beautiful and quite a sensitive love ballad about a man who wants to try again with his one true love; and we get that great bonus track of Donny singing "No One Has To Be Alone." Donny Osmond fans will like this CD an awful lot; and people who liked the original versions of these ballads will be very pleased with this CD.

I bought this CD on impulse today, and I am sure glad I did. I have played it at least 4 times. I have always been aware that Donny had a great voice, but this really shows it off. He is so underrated. I love every song on the album. Even "Puppy Love" has been updated and sounds great. Even if you are not a Donny Osmond fan, you will enjoy this one. I hope he keeps making music like this.

I've matured and so has Donny! A great collection of energizing songs!,

I have to say, I "found" the Donny Live DVD on his webpage and bought it. After so many years of not hearing or seeing Donny, I was blown away by how his music has matured; even the "old" songs like "Puppy Love"! The American music world has been missing out on a terrific performer who has been continuously popular in the U.K. for years! I feel like I've been robbed all these years, but then again it's my fault. I knew what I liked back in the 70's and 80's and I should have known that with the caliber of performances then that he would still be great..if just given the chance.

Somewhere In Time With Donny,
By
This review is from: Somewhere in Time (Audio CD)
"Somewhere In Time" is the album just after Donny recorded "This Is the Moment" in 2001. It contains some of Donny's own favourite songs. It also contains the most gorgoes song selections of the past.
Donny's vocal touch renders these songs new and special again. Some mention: - All Out Of Love: Contemporary but even more beautiful than Air Supply's version - After The Love Has Gone: A very nice and classy Donny's spin to a Earth, Wind and Fire song. - I'm Not In Love : Gorgeous, Simply Gorgeous!!! - Puppy Love : An accoustic version of a hit song that Donny covered as a teenager. - Don't Give Up On Us Baby: Oooh......Donny put new soul into this song. However, having said that, the whole album is worth countless listens to. Donny's voice has matured, his style is smooth, and he gives "current" artists a run for their money!!!

Still one of my favorite voices of all time,

I read about this here at Amazon and bought it at a music store. I commented to the clerk "I bet you wondered who would buy that...!" and he said "who is it? Are you a big fan?" My reply was, well, when I was 10, I thought he was the greatest singer ever!" Again, he asked who Donny Osmond was. I answered, simply, he was the Justin Timberlake of his time. "Oh, I get it....cool". Grrrr!Yes, i had a crush on Donny Osmond in 1973. So did thousands of other 40-ish women! But this cd proves two things: 1. A great voice is a great voice. And Donny has a great voice! And 2. A great song is a great song. If you loved Donny when you were a kid, then you probably grew up listening to these songs, too. "Happy Together" was always a cute, fluffly little tune from the 60's. Donny's version gives it a grown-up spin, and it sounded totally fresh and different to me. And "Don't Give Up On Us" is even better than the original. It's a great CD. Donny's voice is awesome, better than ever. He appealed to me a a little girl and he still appeals to me now. Very few people that I admired back then hold up for me, (David Cassidy, for example...there are lots others) but Donny still does.

"Somewhere in Time" is AWESOME!,
By
This review is from: Somewhere in Time (Audio CD)
Donny Osmond is Pyramid's game show host, married to Debbie, has 5 sons, is the brother of Virl, Tom, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Marie, and Jimmy, but to millions of people around the world Donny is first and foremost a magnificent singer. Some of us know Donny from the "Donny and Marie" variety show or talk show, as Joseph in the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat or the singing voice of Shang in Mulan, but millions knew Donny long before as a singer on the Andy Williams Show and as a member of The Osmonds. Anticipation has been great for "Somewhere in Time" and not only has it lived up to expectations, it has surpassed them a hundred times. From the first notes of "Without You" to the last note of the hidden track "Crazy Horses", Donny's strong, soulful, emotion-filled voice makes one want to cry, laugh, sing-along, dance, and remember. For husbands and boyfriends, this is a CD you can enjoy along with your lady. If you buy her this, she will be extremely happy. If she's already bought one for herself, buy the UK version (or US version for those overseas). There are a few different tracks on each and different CD covers. This will score MAJOR points for you and everyone knows when the lady of the house is happy, EVERYONE is happy. Young people may have wondered why their mothers or grandmothers have a stack of 30 to 40 albums and CDs with Donny Osmond's picture on the cover, why she tapes "Pyramid" everyday, why she acts like a teenager at an N-Sync concert whenever she sees Donny on TV or in person. The reason is simple, for many women Donny Osmond was their first "Puppy Love" back when this song was first released 30 years ago. There is no comparison between the original version and the version on this CD. Donny's mature voice has so much feeling that I'm sure most women will be in love all over again (hopefully with their husbands or boyfriends this time though). This transports women back to the fountain of their youth and for a short time, women can feel 10-16 again. "Without You" is a song that grabs your attention and by the end all you can say is "WOW!" Donny's voice is so clear and strong with a range that most people will not believe. If you see people crying after listening to this song, it is because it is that good. This is one of the best songs I have ever had the pleasure to hear live. This song left Kelly Clarkson in awe when she heard Donny sing this live. A sure hit, if I've ever heard one. "Would I Lie to You", "Could it Be I'm Falling in Love", and "Happy Together" have the soulful upbeat rhythms that make you dance around the room. Any one of these could be a top 40 hit. "I Can't Go for That", "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Don't Give Up on Us" make me forget the original songs with these new renditions. Donny's voice draws me into these songs that I never cared for before when the original artists did them. "After the Love is Gone", "All Out of Love", and "I'm Not in Love" stay truer to the original songs, but Donny's voice is so strong and filled with emotion that it would be hard not to fall for these great love songs. The original song "No One Has To Be Alone" from the upcoming "Land Before Time" movie soundtrack is a wonderful upbeat inspirational song with a fantastic message for young and old alike. The surprise song on the CD "Crazy Horses" is track 13. Just go straight to track 13 to listen to it and avoid the 2 minute delay after track 12. This song was originally done in 1972 by The Osmonds. Donny has treated us to a new updated version with his brothers. I think that most people who knew the original will find it similar, but at the same time quite different. If you've never heard this song, you are in for a treat. Hearing this with those great Osmond voices is something very special. To Donny Osmond, thank you for sharing your angelic God-given voice with us for almost 40 years. Thanks for this album, we've been waiting for it for a long time. It IS a magnificent CD and DESERVES to be heard around the world by millions.

Classic love songs by a Classy guy!!,

I wasn't sure what these songs would sound like when I got this CD from a friend. Donny Osmond? Come on, but I said I would listen with an open mind. From the first notes of "Without You" to the last jamming sounds of the hidden track "Crazy Horses," Donny had me hook, line and sinker! Has he grown up or what! And, I just have to say...even if you don't like the music, the photos are well worth the cover price. Has he grown up or what! I have heard these songs before, as has anyone growing up in the 70's and 80's, but let me tell you, you have NOT heard these songs until you hear Mr. Osmond singing them. The best song on the CD by far is the upbeat and totally danceable "Would I lie to you?" Baby, you can lie to me anytime you want as long as you look into my eyes!! Oh sorry I got carried away there. I don't care who knows it....I am officially a Donny Osmond fan now. He is classy and I sure hope he plans to do a tour some day soon!!

Donny's Newest !,

This review is from: Somewhere in Time (Audio CD)
Donny Osmond is back again with a brand new release. This time out, he's covering some great love songs! The CD opens with "Without You", first made popular by Harry Nilsson. This is a tough song to do just right, but Donny nails it. Really showcases his range and is my personal favorite here. "I Can't Go For That" moves along on a funky groove, much like the original Hall and Oates version. "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" is very true to the original, but Donny does add his own little nuances and touches. "Don't Dream It's Over", first made popular by "Crowded House" breezes along with Donny's smooth delivery. "After The Love Has Gone" and "I'm Not In Love" also stay true to the original versions, but the "Big boys don't cry..." line in the latter, which I always admittedly found annoying, is thankfully NOT done here. "Would I Lie To You", first made popular by the duo Charles And Eddie, is here, daring you not to dance when it comes on! "Puppy Love", Donny's signature song, is updated, all grown up, and totally wonderful here. "Happy Together" bounces along much like the original but with Donny's mark upon it all the way. "Don't Give Up On Us, Baby" was first made popular by David Soul, of "Starsky And Hutch" fame. I was never a real fan of the original version, but Donny changed my mind. Sweet and soulful delivery here. For the final piece on the CD, Donny introduces the song "No One Has To Be Alone", recorded for the newest installment of "The Land Before Time" series of animated movies, "Return To Big Water". Positive, inspiring message, and heartfelt delivery from Donny here. Don't stop your CD player after the 12th track though... there's a "hidden" nugget, a reworking of the classic Osmond Brothers hit "Crazy Horses". Recorded with his brothers, Donny sings lead this time, and totally rocks the house. I can easily hear this one play in dance clubs. All in all, great stuff again from Donny, whose voice is still in top form, and still amazing.

SECRET HIDDEN TRACK,
By A Customer
This review is from: Somewhere in Time (Audio CD)
I only found this track when I put the CD in my computer CD-ROM player: track #13. It is not listed anywhere on the packaging. The main lyric throughout the song is "Crazy Horses". It has a very danceable beat and is something you might hear out in the clubs. This track is contemporary compared with the rest of the album. I never thought I would buy this album but I was in a Spec's record store that had the capability to let you listen to any CD when you put it under the bar-code reader. I was blown away when it started playing. The arrangements are superb. The music is bright and colorful, crisp and clear. It is a great tribute to the 70's pop music by a timeless artist. I didn't think this guy was even around anymore, but boy, can he ever belt 'em out! My favorite track is "Could it be I'm falling in love", originally release by the Spinners. Every track is fun to listen to. I wouldn't mind seeing this in concert. If Manilow can still draw the big crowds on tour, why isn't this guy out there raking it in? I saw Andy Williams on the Grammys last weekend. These two guys must be taking the same vitamins because they are not aging. I hope we hear some more music from Donny in the near future. This was my first Donny Osmond purchase (and I don't plan on letting the guys at work know I have it.) G. Barnes

An album that showcases Donny's beautiful voice,
By Sherri Szczechura (Dover, Delaware (United States)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Somewhere in Time (Audio CD)
Donny Osmond has always been underestimated by some people who only think of him as a former teen idol, but those who have followed his ongoing career know the talent hidden behind the name. Many finally recognized his wonderful voice and other talents when he did "Joseph" on stage, and then his ability to adapt to different styles of music was showcased on his previous CD, "This Is The Moment". This latest CD, "Somewhere In Time", will, I think, finally eliminate any doubt as to the power of his voice and his wonderful ability to put passion and emotion into a song. These older songs bring back such great memories for those who remember them, and Donny's voice and style make them seem new. I think the first hit will be his version of "Without You" which truly shows best his powerful, rich voiceand a man who can really put emotion into the words. His range on this song is particularly amazing. He updates so many other songs in such a wonderful way that you just have to listen to really appreciate it. This will definitely bring a new generation of fans Donny's way. Finally, be sure to listen to the hidden track #13 (it's not even listed on the CD-I didn't even know it was there until several days after listening to the CD)-it's a great surprise! |
