5.0 out of 5 stars LUSH ROMANCE
John Barry, who composed some of the most memorable movie music ever recorded (James Bond theme; Born Free; Out Of Africa) created a soundtrack that in every way is superior than the film it underscored. Though the movie is a must for all romantics, with its heartbreaking premise of ill-fated time travel, the score works gorgeously on its own. A swirling,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sounds better in the movie
Some will wonder what I mean by "sounds better in the movie" in my title to this review: when you are actually watching the film, with the music serving as background, it seems a bit more upbeat than it does when the music is isolated. Some of the CD sounds a bit too somber for my taste. One really outstanding track on here, though, is Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini,...

A swirling, string-laden series of compositions built around a classic Rachmaninoff piece, this soundtrack is full of drama, emotion and beauty. It is one of those rare pieces of music that never ever grows old, and should be a part of everyone's music collection. Melancholy and evocative, this CD provides a wealth of romantic possibility, and has often underscored some of the most meaningful moments in my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Romance, Timeless Music, January 20, 2006
This review is from: Somewhere In Time: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
'Somewhere In Time' is the ultimate tragedy/romance film. Made in '80, it has been one of my favorite films and musical scores for the last 25 years. John Barry's soundtrack is elegant, intensely romantic and will bring the listener to tears whether they have seen the movie or not. To me that is definitely the final and most important test of the value of the music.

Definitely for the thoughtful, romantic and emotional personality. Turn out the lights, put the CD on and find a comfortable spot. The music will ellicite feelings and emotions that you never knew you had.

5.0 out of 5 stars A memorable and moving film score, May 22, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Somewhere In Time: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The score for Somewhere in Time is truely amazing. I think it is one of the best scores ever written. It stays with you long after you have seen the film. The music is perfect throughout the movie. Each scene has exactly the right musical background. The most moving, for me, is the short piece of music that is heard in the scene where an aged McKenna is returning to her hotel room having met Collier. I find it some of the most moving music I have ever heard in a film. For me, I can listen to the score and visualize the scene in my mind, remembering dialog and even remembering clothes that were worn at the time. I think it is partly due to the score that this film has remained so popular over the years since it was released. The score made the movie memorable. It should be in everyone's film soundtrack library.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks ever, December 6, 2002

The music fits perfectly with "Somewhere in Time's" story. The music enables viewers to feel the depth of emotions that the characters are feeling. The soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous. The music of "Somewhere in Time" truly stays with you through time. There hasn't been one romantic movie that I've seen to surpass the quality and beauty of both the movie and the soundtrack. If you like baroque music and loved soundtracks from movies such as "The Red Violin," "The Legend of 1900," and "Out of Africa" chances are you will love this soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly beautiful, October 18, 1999
This review is from: Somewhere In Time: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Back in 1989 I fell in love with a much younger man who played the violin. I had recently seen the movie "Somewhere in Time" and just had to have the soundtrack. My beautiful lover gave it to me as a birthday present. As I was listening to it, I heard the song behind me. As I turned I saw him playing along with the music on his violin. He had learned to play it as a special surprise to me. He did it so beautifully I cried. To this day, I still think of this wonderful man and his very special gift of Love everytime I listen to the haunting sounds from my cassette. It is almost worn out so I had to purchase a CD from Amazon.com. I can hardly wait for it to arrive. It is by far my most favorite musical score ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most beautiful music ever!, October 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Somewhere In Time: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The first time I heard this beautiful, haunting music was on a soap opera in the early 80's. My first cassette tape wore out and bought a second one. After the second one wore out, I purchased the CD. I also have the movie video and fell in love with that too. The most beautiful love story with the most beautiful music, what a timeless treasure! The music consoled me through the death of my two brothers and my mother. Listening to this music, I can forget all my cares and troubles, gaze upwards to the heavens and imagine the beauty of eternal life. Thank you John Barry for sharing your magnificent talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still stands the test of time, and always will., February 23, 2004
By A Customer

Simply put, this is some of most beautifully crafted music you will ever find. From the original "Somewhere In Time" theme, to the rendition of the Rhapsody, to the beautiful track "A Day Together," one can hardly feel unsatisfied by the emotion that pours out in this music. An even bigger treat is to actually watch the film and see how the pieces of music are so brilliantly married to their corresponding scenes. I was fortunate enough to pick up the Gold Masterdisc version of this years back. Unfortunately it's now out of print but I highly recommend to lovers of this soundtrack that you search for it on
Ebay because the transfer and sound quality is magnificent.

How powerful is this music? To me, it almost sounds at times that it came down from heaven itself. It's more than music. It's a journey into the soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars I recommend you buying the re-recording instead., October 4, 2003

This soundtrack is truly one of the best soundtracks ever produced. However, to get your money's worth, you really should go with the pre-recording version. Not only are there more songs, but the sound recording is a lot better. I really wished they would have told me that the sound recording to the cd might contain some hiss and "other anomalies that exist with analog recordings". Amazon does not guarantee product satisfaction on products like these. So, just to be safe, and only for a dollar more, buy the pre-recording instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one that had captured my heart., December 3, 1999
This review is from: Somewhere In Time: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Having listen to more than hundreds of soundtracks, as well as many orchestral music and classical music, I dare say that not many pieces of them had captured my heart. And among them, Somewhere In Time was one of the best I have ever listen in my life.

I have this song played by many orchestra, including the Cincinnati Pops, Royal Philharmonic, and The City of Prague, The Royal Scottish, as well as some Piano solo version. However, the original one still worth having in my huge collection of Somewhere In Time. For a word, check it out and hear it yourself.

PS. I'm currently searching for the version from London Symphony. I have no idea if the LSO has ever play this or not. So, if anyone hear about that, please tell me. Thank you.

but achingly beautiful for the love stricken/broken-hearted. I have always enjoyed this instant classical music since I first saw the movie at a very young age. Everytime I here the theme it just gives me chills/goose bumps. Good for relaxing, studying, or working. Recommended for good listeners of good (amazing) music.
