A 'must' for any culinary collection!,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sommelier Prep Course: An Introduction to the Wines, Beers, and Spirits of the World (Paperback)
Michael Gibson's THE SOMMELIER PREP COURSE offers a fine introduction to wine, beer and spirits for aspiring sommeliers, bartenders and wine lovers and offers its review in layman's terms so that any studying for sommelier certification or who wishes to improve their bartending skills won't be stymied by language! It packs in fine illustrations as it covers New World and Old World wines, viticulture, and other fermented spirits and acts like a study course complete with review questions, maps, key terms and more. A 'must' for any culinary collection!

Lots of great information. I really liked the chapters on the history of wine. Even with all the details this book has, it still was fun to read. I loved all the side stories that really bring wine to life. I have stopped reading many other wine book just because they are so dry. This book I actually finished. I also like that the author included information on beer and liquor as well.

A complete introduction guide to all kind of drinks: wine, beer, spirits, etc.
If you live in any country, that allows moderate alcohol consumption, this book will help you open your internal happiness door, and explain your passion for social drinking, as well as how to transmit your joy to your guests.... Schiffini

Excellent book. Very informative and practical. I was able to use the information in my wine tastings and they were very helpful. Also the food and wine section is very good and helped with my cooking match ups. Overall a very nice and enjoyable reading.

Factual mistakes spoil book,
By Nick "Nick" (Ottawa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sommelier Prep Course: An Introduction to the Wines, Beers, and Spirits of the World (Paperback)
This book, on the surface, is a comprehensive beginners guide to the world of wine and spirits. It is well constructed and easy to read. However, it is marred by multiple factual mistakes in several areas of the book. This completely negates any value the book may have for an accurate general knowledge of the wine/spirits industry. For someone who merely has a general interest in wine, beer or spirits, there is a lot of basic information here in an easy to read format. If you are, however, as the book self-promotes "studying for certification as a Sommelier", factual errors become a huge factor in the veracity of this publication. As you become aware of error after error in this book you lose faith in the integrity of the whole book. This is a real shame and author Michael Gibson with his qualifications should be embarrassed to have his name associated with a book full of mistakes in his area of expertise. A serious and real disappointment here.
