Product Description

The Direct Drive garage door opener is the only one of its kind which offers Europe's leading innovative technology. Unlike conventional garage door opener that use a noisy chain, belt or screw the Direct Drive has only one moving part. The motor glides silently along the chain which is embedded in a sturdy steel rail. Extremely quiet garage door opener with virtually no vibrations. Perfect for homes with living spaces above the garage. Very smooth operation with soft start and stop technology. Because the motor is located at the door instead of the back of the opener it maximizes the power.

I tend to research or over research something before I buy it, suffering research remorse before I ever purchase and the garage door opener was no different.
When my 10 year old Craftsman chain drive opener on the main garage door quit working past the point of my ability or at least willingness to repair it again, I set off on a search of designs, service life and reviews of what is available today.
Until I came across the Sommer design my preference was screw drive openers. I still curse the day I sold my old house and didn't take the 25+ year old Genie screw drive opener without safety features with me.
The first realization is this; there's really only 4 "main" manufactures of garage door hardware and designs in the US; Genie, Liftmaster, Chamberlain and Wayne Dalton. To make it worse they even use each others parts, so what is one is often times found in another manufactures model, not just by similar design, but by actual part number.
I focused on screw type drives as my primary choice but what I found simply alarmed me. The nut that actually rides the screw and performs the lifting of the door in most mid grade to high end units was not brass but nylon. This all but guarantees replacement parts and or service calls. I looked at belt drives and direct drives too. The main detractor to all of them were numbers of recently posted reviews of what only looks like quality problems and the same old design with cheaper and cheaper parts.
As the research went on and on I came across Sommer. I like seeing designs and engineering that are neat, simple and serviceable. I downloaded installation and owners manual looked the illustrated parts breakdown and watch their video more times than I'll admit here. There is literally one moving part.

I received my new 3/4 horsepower opener this past Friday. So I set about to installing it over the weekend. It was a little bit of a project since my garage is fully finished with sheetrock and texture but had not been pre-designed with a garage door opener in mind.

The package arrived in a single box about 3 foot long and 1 foot wide and deep. I was slightly concerned as there was some damage to one end of the box when UPS dropped it off. But once I opened the box, I found the product to be well packaged and protected. There was no evidence of any damage inside the box. I was surprised and slighly confused as I had read some other reviews talking about 2 packages and such and the track being in a seperate package. All I can say is that was not the case with this opener as the track was in the box as well.

The PRO's --
1. Well Packaged
2. All items are seperated and package to flow with the installation process.
3. Well designed overall and makes it very easy for the homeowner to install.
4. Engineering is outstanding.
5. The fitment of parts is flawless.
6. Operation is beautiful and extremely smooth and quiet.
7. Main "operating" parts are stainless steel and will last a lifetime.

The CON's --
1. The instructions could be a little better written with better graphics.
2. The plastic pieces look cheap.
3. The main "C" bracket that holds up the far end that hangs from the ceiling is scary (will explain further down).
4. Inability to open the "eyes" in order to change the wiring.
5. Extremely cheap looking and feeling wall opener button.
6. Remotes for your car are cheesy and clumsy.
7.

SOMMER Direct Drive Garage Door Opener 3/4 HP

Purchased the Sommer Direct Drive Garage Door opener for my home when the builder installed Chamberlain Liftmaster (5 years old) went bad. The logic board went up and I was not going to spend over $100 to replace it, so I decided to purchase a new opener. After researching several brands, I chose the Sommer and I am very happy with it.

Upon receiving the Sommer, I pre-installed the unit on my workbench according to the instructions. Then the next day, I removed the Chamberlain unit, the chain belt, all wiring, and sensors. This and the installation of the Sommer took about 2 hours and went smoothly. When everything was in place and connected, I then set about programming the two (2) remote controls. This was accomplished in less than 2 minutes. I did have a problem with the wall unit, but it was dinner time, so I left it as is for the night. The following day I saw where I had inserted one of the wires into the wrong sockets. Once that was corrected, it worked flawlessly.

I also purchased the SOMMER Wireless Keyless Keypad for Direct Drive Garage Door Opener but had misplaced the instructions. I sent an e-mail to the Sommer-USA company and received a phone call back less than an hour later. One of their technicians walked me through programming the unit in less than 2 minutes. It works well and am enjoying using it.

In researching the Sommer, I did read some negative comments about it being "slow opening." It is a bit slower than other units, i.e. Genie, Chamberlain, or Sears but it is a very minor inconvenience. The quietness easily makes up for it being a bit slower as does the LIFETIME warranty.

I have had it for a month now and am very happy with my decision.
