Hi folks - this is actually Robert Rich here. I noticed that many sources are selling the "radio edits" of this project for downloads as if they were the full project. People should be aware that "7 hours" really means that the DVD is 7 hours long. I want to make sure that people aren't paying for a 70 minute long edit. Thank you for all the friendly comments. - RR

This is a condensation of Robert Rich's all night sleep concerts where he encouraged his audience to sleep while his music droned and hypnotized them to sleep. This is very good for those who like ambient music to zone out with or fall asleep to. Rich and Steve Roach are the most intelligent people doing ambient music today. You can hear it in the excellent production and in the intelligent changes and experimenting with different scales and sounds.

This album is, so far as I know, unique in the annals of recorded sound. It uses the extra-long capacity of the DVD-Audio format to present one long 7-hour composition, sliced into three tracks of 2:34:10, 1:59:00 and 2:31:08.

Based on Robert's famed "sleep concerts" where the audience is encouraged to doze while he weaves gentle drones from the stage, the music here is a combination of gentle electronics with sound effects: crickets, frogs, distant birds, dripping water. If the idea of seven hours of drones sounds boring to you, you're probably not a candidate for this disc. But if you know Robert's work at all, you know that even after a whole day (or night) of listening to this album, it never gets tiresome, repetitive or boring.

True you can't dance to it -- but you can most definitely read, work, or yes, nap to it and the experience will be wholly satisfactory.

I agree with the other reviews so I will not say more about the excellent content of Rich's work (thank you, Robert Rich -- impressive stuff!). I'm writing just to add a tip for playing the DVD audio. I do not have a TV or DVD player in my bedroom, so I played the DVD on my computer in another room. Using an FM transmitter attached to the computer (I use the Coby CA-738), I then listened to the recording through a good portable radio in my bedroom. Worked great.

I agree with other reviewers, there is no doubting the quality of the offering here.

Unfortunately I didn't discover until after purchasing that track 2 is mono due to a production error. The track is apparently available as a flac download with the correct stereo restoration.

Given that all Robert Rich fans are probably meticulous about the production qualities I'm surprised there is no warning to indicate this flaw.

Had I known of this prior to purchase I probably would have gone for the download as I listen mainly with headphones where the error is most obvious.

The DVD should be offered at a substantial discount on it's current price which is only slightly cheaper than the flac download. My purchase was from hypnosrec market seller (can't fault their service though).

Amazons price makes this error even less acceptable.

Disc content review: I have not listened to much of this disc while awake. But since I've had it for the past few days, I seem to sleep better once I'm asleep. It seems great for that. It's not an issue of drowning out city noise pollution; I live where it's mostly silent at night (aside from frogs and coyotes sometimes).
Amazon listing review:
I was initially angry that I paid the price for a high-resolution DVD-A disc as listed by Amazon, but got DVD-V. Now, I'm happy since I can play DVD-V in my bedroom (and don't need to sleep in my car). I attempted to submit a correction to Amazon, but that was unsuccessful (they appear to be incapable of distinguishing between DVD- audio and video sound formats or of even reading attempts to correct their fraud). I guess the products would cost more if they had to make their listings accurate, though I expect better from a generally great music seller.

Of all my ambient recordings, this one gets the most play. Its an 8 hour DVD, music only (i.e., you put it in your DVD player, but it will only play sound, no video) Play it and dream. Even during the day.

Really stunning, unusual and can take you on a journey. This DVD is 7 hours contrary to what many are saying. However, the black center part that holds the disc in place was completely shattered. The replacement arrived exactly the same, so apparently this is an issue. I'm hoping Amazon will give me some type of credit for this hassle. The disc plays fine but this is annoying as the disc is free to move around. I'm curious if there are other recordings out there that are comparable to this one. I think this is truly a masterpiece.

I understand that this was put on DVD so you get more time and something close to the long extended concert of this music, and I love this DVD. I just wish Robert Rich would have put at least a few photos up to go with the DVD music. I suppose that would shorten the length of the music too much. Nice work thought. Masterful.

First, this is a lovely piece, although not my usual genre. Speaking from a troubled sleeper point of view, this works every time. I don't take meds (OTC or otherwise) to sleep...but this works for me consistently. I bought the DVD years ago...my problem is that I only have DVD format in the living room. Make it available to my Kindle, and I can figure out the speaker situation (don't want to sleep with earphones).
Sincerely,
Sleepless in Olympia
