Biography

Until Public Enemy, hip-hop was wrapped up in gold chains, fast women and being top dog in rap throwdowns. But with the group's rise, hip-hop gained a social and political consciousness. Emphasizing pride and condemning prejudice, Public Enemy became the most influential and controversial rap group of its time, hailed by history and by all who have since followed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Bonus features too..., July 18, 2003
This review is from: Son of a Bush (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
It's nice to see Public Enemy still around and doing what they have to do and saying what they have to say. This is a single from last year's album "Revoloution" . This disc contains 3 tracks, 2 from that album and one from the Fine Arts Milita album.

Son of a Bush is a damn good track, and musically is a bit different for a PE song. It's got a nice guitar hook that builds up and explodes right in your face. Chuck has never been more serious or as mad as this song in quite some time.

A Twisted Sense of God, the Fine Arts Militia track, although not a PE track (Chuck D lectures on it) is a breath of fresh air. With the live instrmentation, it's a welcome addition as Chuck speaks about 9/11. 9-1-1 is no joke. I highly recommend the FAM album as well.

Finally, get your Sh*t Together is more of a old-school PE song, but a bit stripped down. It's got the pounding drums and horn samples that we've all come to love, and a nice scratch section in the middle.

The real treats come from the DVD that is included with this. We get to see the video for Gotta Give the Peeps What They Need. It's great to see Chuck and Flav showing no steps of slowing down, and there's some nice Matrix style camera work in this video too. Overall, a good video and it's a shame this couldn't be seen on MTV. Then again, without trying to sound too insulting, most of the viewers who watch MTV wouldn't understand the true meaning of the words and visuals in that video.

We also get a nice "Behind Enemy Lines" feature, which is a behind the scenes of the music video. It's a fun little addition to the DVD.

Finally, we get lyrics to the songs on the single, which is a great idea.

There's a few gripes that I have with this, but these are very minor. Firstly, I wished we'd see some new b-sides from the new era of PE. Since all 3 tracks were released before, and I already own the PE and FAM album their from, it was nothing new. These little personal gripes takes nothing away from the actual content of the music. The DVD is a welcome addition as well. I really wish more artists would add bonuses such as this to their singles and albums.

One person complained about this, and recommonded the earlier albums instead. Obviously, it's incredibly hard to create another classic masterpiece such as "Fear" or "Nation", but this is still great stuff and much respect goes out the PE for still being masters in this business.

Peace

4.0 out of 5 stars Music, June 10, 2004
This review is from: Son of a Bush (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Music should be there to dispell ignorance and say something about the world we live in. Pop stars are there to look pretty. Pop stars spread ignorance through meaningless emptiness. Public enemy are one of the few voices left in music, speaking politicaly cold as always. Long may they continue. Music with a message. This is the way it should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars SON OF BUSH....Them are fighting words in Middle America, June 24, 2003
This review is from: Son of a Bush (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
It's reassuring to see artistic and intelligent American based groups such as PUBLIC ENEMY taking a stand and verbally providing their viewpoint on the BUSH regime.

SON OF BUSH is a strong song that demonstrates why the musical formats of "hip-hop & rap" are currently the most important art forms in music.

Wonder how republicans & white bread middle america will react to this song.....will they and the media try to DIXIECHICK the members of PUBLIC ENEMY!

The lyrics of SON OF A BUSH are alone worth the price of this CD "Son of a BAD MAN" (plus the guitar hook is off the hook).

Purchase it and then blast it on CAPITAL HILL !
