3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but nothing special, August 29, 2011
This review is from: Son of Dawn (1st Quest) (Pt. 3) (Paperback)
I was rather disappointed by this book. The characters were not well developed, the plot was simplistic, and the main character drove me nuts.

Dav was arrogant, elaborately self-sacrificial, and everything came easily to him. Leanna gave him a few swordfighting lessons on board a moving vessel, and suddenly he's the one who must defend the group and always be ready to fight? To me, this seemed insane. Obviously, Leanna was the more valuable fighter. Also, the whole journey was her idea, but as soon as she pulled Dav out of the ocean, he began making all the decisions and announcing to newcomers that this was HIS quest. Insufferable.

Overall, an okay story, but clumsy writing and characterization ruined this one for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Fantasy Read, April 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Son of Dawn (1st Quest) (Pt. 3) (Paperback)
I loved this book! The characters had flaws, though the elves were a bit sterotypical. And a hero that is immune to magic is a new idea, and how the author carries it out is wonderful. I also liked how McKeone wove in Norse mythology into the story. The reason this book has four stars instead of five is because the ending is a cliff-hanger that just screams sequel, but there never was one published, which is a shame becauase there is a lot more that could be done with Dav.
