5.0 out of 5 stars Violent but masterful in both story and art, December 7, 2004
This review is from: Son of the Gun #1: Sinner (Paperback)
This volume collects in translated (and slightly smaller) form the first two French volumes.

The story takes place in Latin America and stars a man who is born into utter poverty. A victim of society, he grows up to be a criminal -- a rapist and a killer -- but a skilled one, becoming a powerful man's bodyguard. Oh, and he happens to have been born with a tail.

SON OF THE GUN is violent: we see our main character and his crew kidnap an attractive Latina off the streets and rape her; the whole series is framed by our character, older, literally on a cross for reasons as yet unexplained. But SON OF THE GUN's idiosyncracy keeps it from becoming yet another "tough guy" tale (pardon the pun): from the character's tail to the eccentric personalities of his employer and his bodyguarding coworkers, the story's fine craftsmanship is balanced nicely with its more violent aspects.

The writer, Alexandro Jodorowsky, is best known in comics for his science fiction -- including INCAL, METABARONS, and TECHNOPRIESTS -- but he takes to present-day Latin America like a true native.

The artwork is particularly good. Drawn in a realistic fashion, it captures emotion without being exaggerated and treats architecture with precision. High praise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!, January 1, 2009
This review is from: Son of the Gun #1: Sinner (Paperback)
Part Greek tragedy, part Bad Lieutenant, this brutal tale of redemption is hard to put down. Murder, rape, lust, and violence almost repel the reader, while beautifully rendered art and desert vistas elicit awe. A fascinating mix of beauty and horror that is nicely paced and completed in two volumes.
