This review is from: Son of the Mob (Hardcover)
Gordan Korman seemed to have leaped the extra mile in Son of the Mob, I loved everything about, except the ending. Vince Luca 17, a highschool student but also a Mob prince. He recieves what every kid wants a hefty allowance, a porsche for his birthday, and basically anything he wants. Even though the stuff he gets sometimes isn't bought, example the porsche. Good ol' Dad working for the vending machine buisness, Vince's way of putting the Mafia in code, Honest Abe Luca, Vince's father, keeps Vince protected and wealthy. His family consists of many uncles , which are under his father in the uh...buisness. When Vince gets a second date, his first was ruined by a Rat and a brother, Vince and Kendra seem to be the perfect couple except thier fathers are opposites, Kendra's dad works for the FBI, that happens to be the one who is trying to put Anthony Luca into the slammer. The book sends you in twists and turns, almost like a Romeo and Juiliet story. This was favortie book by far, I'm interested to see what Gordon Korman will do next.

This review is from: Son of the Mob (Hardcover)
Vince Luca is a 17 year-old student who just wants to live the common high school life. Chasing girls, playing football, and other "normal" things are what he aspires to. However, Vince is in a rather precarious situation. His father is a mob boss and Vince wants to have nothing to do with it. His entire family with the exception of his mother, believes that one day he will come around and accept his position. Vince suffers the classic struggle of a protagonist trying to escape his family's reputation and image. However, Vince ends up right where he didn't want to be, posed by the F.B.I. as a loan-shark for his father's business. The book "Son Of The Mob" is the perfect blend of something which, is very serious (mob-affiliation), and applying it to highschool life, something almost all teens can relate to. It is comedic excellence and had me yelling, gripped, and shaking my head at the misfortune and unexpected turns that Vince Luca takes. At every moment, Gordon Korman throws in another piece of the plot to thicken and enrich the book. Not deep by any standards, this book does have an amazing correlation to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Vince and Kendra, being the "star-crossed lovers," and their families of completely opposite backgrounds makes the book suspenseful and comical.

Wow!,
This review is from: Son of the Mob (Hardcover)
This is literally the best book I've read! It has a distinct voice, and a (very hot =P)believable main character. Sometimes it can be confusing, but once you catch up with the fast-paced action, you'll love it.
It's a classic Romeo and Juliette tale with the softy-mobster meets tuff-FBI-agent-kid. Vince wants nothing to do with his family's business, and from what we can tell, neither does Kendra. They're obviously a perfect match but before they can get any real action in, their outside lives kick in. Since Kendra's father has Vince's house bugged (and for another secret reason) her father soon finds out about the teens' secret love. I don't want to give away the book, but as most fairy tales turn out, they live happily ever after. I would keep this book away from kids under 11. There's nothing X-rated, but there is some suggestion of sexuality. This is a great book for younger teenagers. I hope you love it as much as I did!

an entertaining story with a lot of laughs,

This review is from: Son of the Mob (Hardcover)
Gordon Korman's story about a Mafia prince's attempts to lead a normal life and sustain a lasting relationship with a girl who's father happens to be the FBI agent bugging his house is both highly entertaining and gripping with it's fast-paced storytelling. Vince Luca swears that he wants nothing to do with his fater's 'vending machine business', because it has repeatedly caused him social disaster. However, when he does get involved in 'The Life' for what he feels is a legitimate reason, he gets tangled in a string of events that eventually overwhelms him. The characters in Son Of The Mob are very believeable, such as Vince's New Media class teacher (complete with his 'Your Problem' catchphrase), and Vince's slightly annoying friend Alex, who wants nothing more than to use Vince's Mob connections to set himself up with girls. The author's dry sense of humor kept me turning the pages of this book; the satirical remarks the characters make were, in several cases, laugh-out-loud funny. And although the ending was a little predictable, the plot still had a fair amount of twists and surprises. Son Of The Mob was a very enjoyable story with a great sense of humor and style. Korman keeps the jokes coming and the story flows consistently with suspense the whole time. Although I think the ending could have been a little better, I would definatley reccomend this book to anyone looking for a funny story with an entertaining, unsual plot.

You will like this book because it's very energetic and something is always happening. It makes your own problems seem like nothing compared to Vince's in Son of the Mob.Vince Luca has a life most kids would love to have. A new mercedes for his birthday, an allowance like you wouldn't believe, and a certain kindness from all of his teachers. It all seems to good to be true and it is. Come to find out his mercedes is stolen, his allowance is a part of his Uncle's murder business, and his dad pays off his teachers so he gets good grades. Vince is a like able who wants nothing to with his dad's no good business. Kendra, Vinces girlfriend, is skeptical about their relationship. But who wouldn't be with Vince's dad being King of the Mob and Kendra's dad being the top FBI agent right on his tail. So read this book to see what happens to Vince and Kendra in Son of the Mob.

Son Of The Mob,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Son of the Mob (Paperback)
Vince is a 17 year old kid whose dad is in the mob. Vince wants nothing to do with his dad's business, but his job keeps interfering with Vince's life. Vince meets a girl named Kendra, but later finds out her dad is an FBI agent who is trying to arrest Vince's dad. While all of this is happening Vince is helping a guy from his dad's business. The more and more Vince is trying to help this guy named Jimmy Rat, the more and more Vince is going into the family business. Kendra finds out what Vince is doing and dumps him. Vince has to decide whether he should go into the business or get Kendra back.
Son of the Mob by Gordon Korman is a suspenseful and exciting book. It is full of action and romance. This fast-paced book is confusing at times, but it leaves you turning page after page to find out what happens next. I would recommend it to any teenage boy or girl. If you like a book that has a lot of action, romance, and suspense then this book will be perfect for you.

A fun, light read,
By Matt Hetling "Matt" (Bethel, ME USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Son of the Mob (Paperback)
Gordon Korman books are always a fun read, and Son of the Mob is no different.
With a plotline that might best be described as "Sopranos-lite," Korman gives us Vince, a 17 year old hero who is the white sheep of a mafia family, headed by feared crime boss Anthony Luca. Like other boys his age, Vince is preoccupied with girls, unfair teachers, and homework assignments. Unlike his peers, however, Vince also has to deal with a range of ethical questions related to the criminal activity of his family. He doesn't want to partake in the ill-gotten gains of his family, but everything he wears, eats, and drives is tainted with mob-money. Things get sticky when Vince finds out that the girl he's dating is the daughter of the FBI agent assigned to build a case against his father. To make matters worse, Vince decides to take a hand in his father's activities. In an attempt to prevent violence, Vince takes responsibility for some of the debts owed to his father by some lowlife thugs, but that puts him in the position of trying to collect money himself. This is the first Korman book that I've read for about ten years or so, and I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I measure this up against some of his early works, such as "No Coins Please" and the Bruno and Boots series. Maybe it's just me, but some of the jokes, especially the thick-as-flies mob references, seemed a little over the top. However, Korman has matured in several ways, and I appreciated that he was able to give a lot of competing plot lines their due space. The only exception to this was a storyline involving an FBI insider somewhere in the ranks of the Mob. This was barely mentioned early, but became the biggest climax at the end. Korman's writing is always good for a couple of chuckles, and you know that he's not going to get preachy about social issues or anything like that. More than any other author, he reminds me of Robert Asprin, who has a similar sense of humor and a similar knack for showing that people, whether they're mobsters or wizards or what, are all pretty much the same inside.

"Like Father, like Son",

This review is from: Son of the Mob (Hardcover)
Son of the Mob was an excellent book. I gave it a rating of five, because I felt it did a good job of progosticating what was going to happen next. Vince Luca is nothing like his family and doesn't want to be anything like them either. His father is part of the mob, which deals with tons of secertcy and crime. Vince Luca has a life most kids would love to have. A new mercedes for his birthday, an allowance like you wouldn't believe, and a certain kindness from all of his teachers. It all seems to good to be true and it is. Come to find out his mercedes is stolen, his allowance is a part of his Uncle's murder business, and his dad pays off his teachers so he gets good grades.Even though it's nice to have all these luxuries, it puts serious doubts on ever having a girlfriend. What is he to tell his girlfriend when she asks what his father does for a living? Still say he's part of the "vending machine" service like he was told when he was younger or the truth? Finally when he meets Kendra is she worth the trouble? Her family seems like the biggest problem of all to though, because her father is the FBI agent that wants Vince's father caught.

This review is from: Son of the Mob (Paperback)
Son of the Mob was a very good book. It was a razor sharp dialogue and really fast pace. It is also a page turner. The narration is clear and distinct. Vince who is the main character doesn't want to get involved with hid dad's "vending business". When your dad is officially the scariest guy on Long Island, it can be hard to have a normal life. Vince's life is tangled up in his dad's business, for how hard he tries to stay out of it. It starts with a hot date that turns bad, Vince goes to get the blanket he finds a unconscious body wrapped in the blanket. Stuff like this can really have a bad affect on your love life. Second he gets arrested for a Porshe that he got on his birthday and then finds out it was stolen. The football games he gets touchdown after touchdown, knowing that no one is going to tackle him. Finally he meets a girl, named Kendra that turns out to be a FBI agents daughter. Although he keeps a low profile at school he still gets some of the advantages of his fathers business. The thing that brings them together is the same thing that breaks them up. Vince telling her that he had nothing to do with his dad's business, but she soon finds out, and has photographs of him making deals with his dad's employees. Vince finds himself going to her house a lot, but has no idea he is in a FBI agents house, and the house is bugged. Vince wants this relationship undercover because he knows if he tells his father or she tells her father it wouldn't be a good thing. This is the thing that drives them apart from each other. When they are at the mall and suddenly they see her father and Vince is like "let's get out of here." Kendra has a puzzled look on her face and is asking Vince "When are you going to meet my parents?" Finally Vince goes ahead and tells his father, and his father doesn't have any problem with it, but the problem is getting it to Kendra father.
