Book Description

Imagine growing up in the largest slum on the planet in the year 2080AD. 20 million people are your neighbors, huddled together in an ocean of rusted dwellings made from whatever Sedonia City, the towering metropolis in the distance, decides to throw away. Gang members, known as the T99s, are the heads of your community: smuggling tech, trafficking drugs, and fighting a constant guerilla war with the City’s bio-augmented EXO police force. There is little hope for survival. None for escape to a better life beyond the half-mile high Border between city and slum. This is Matteo’s world. A bright kid, but sick and weak since childhood, he is painfully dependent on Jogun: loving older brother, and hardened soldier for the T99s. When a luxury transport from Sedonia’s aerial traffic crash-lands in Rasalla, it threatens to change Matteo and Jogun’s fate forever. And all fates are connected.

The Dwellers of Rasalla, bound by family in the scrap, ashes, and dirt.

The Citizens of Sedonia, oblivious to danger in the buzzing twilight of the Neuro-Social Revolution.

The EXOs, placing themselves in harm’s way to perform their duty to protect their homes and fellow officers.

And The Ruling Elite, whose long-buried secrets and desperate plans could spell the end of civilization...or a new beginning.

Son of Sedonia is an action-filled science fiction epic with a soul and a clear message. Its characters live, breathe, suffer, and love in their different worlds, each brought to the brink as the Third-World collides with the First. Their future could well be ours.

About the Author

Ben Chaney grew up with a passion for Sci-Fi and Fantasy that led him to study visual storytelling and illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. After graduation, he worked his way up through the video game industry; becoming a Game Artist, and later, an Art Director. But storytelling had taken a hold of him at SCAD, and manifested in a pet writing project. Often neglected or pushed aside for other things, “Son of Sedonia” grew slowly over six long years. Somehow, the image of the boy on the slum rooftop stayed stuck in his head. As Ben honed his craft, the world changed. America plunged into recession, political discord, and uncertainty, triggering a desire for information the likes of which he had never before experienced. Ben's writing, and this book, matured as he did. Video game development had given him confidence in his abilities. What to do with those abilities became impossible to ignore. That and the ceaseless, loving voices around him, all saying the same thing: “Follow your heart.” In June 2012, he left a successful career in game development to do just that. Son of Sedonia is the result.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was fantastic/ March 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book piqued my interest when I saw the cover art posted online, and when I read the price, I thought I'd give it a try.

Mr. Chaney, I want to know every time you release a book. I could not put this down. The story was personal and fast-paced; the characters had depth which was relate-able but not so far as to exclude room for readers' imaginations; the scenery was vivid, original, and yet it was continuous in its interweaving flow with the sharp dialogue - it was simply wonderful.

"Son of Sedonia" is one of the best science fiction books I've had the pleasure to read since some of Ray Bradbury's short stories. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Chaney, and I'll be looking/hoping to read more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saw this on Imgur/Reddit March 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I spotted the cover of this book on the website Imgur, which I frequent, and was intrigued. One of the fellow Imgurians was nice enough to post a link to the book in the comments, so I couldn't help myself from checking it out... AND I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID! I purchased the book yesterday and already finished it today. Couldn't put it down! This author has made an absolutely splendid debut, and I look forward to reading many more from them in the future. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and buy "Son of Sedonia" March 31, 2013
By MrMarsh
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I saw the amazing cover on reddit and I knew I had to read this book. As a college student I don't have a lot of time for "fun" reading, but for the past two days I have not been able to set this thing down.

Ben does an amazing job of captivating your mind from the second you begin to read.

The character development is unlike any book I have ever read. I felt myself emotionally connected to Matteo, Jogun, and even Kabbard (the bad guy). I could feel what they felt, and saw the situations that unfolded in the book from their point of views. And the way he connects everything in the end is amazing. The imagery created by the author is unparalleled, a complex world of sedonia & rasalla were as clear as day to me.

A few things to note about the book. There is swearing & violence but they fit appropriately. And specific parts can be confusing, but don't hesitate to reread sections as they are still just as good the second time through.

I absolutely loved this book, and plan on buying a few paperback versions for friends whom I know will enjoy it just as much as I did.

I hope there is a sequel & many more books by this bright young author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looking forward to more from this author May 22, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this one a while back after seeing it in Imgur just to be supportive, and turned out enjoying the book much more than anticipated. While I can't say the general plot is the most unique in SciFi, the characters, landscaping, concepts all have a remarkable depth that is unexpected from a first-time author. He also switched very fluidly from the futuristic-utopian-technobabble to the gangster-slum-slang in a way that made both extremes believable.

I would like this to have a sequel or potentially become a trilogy, Mr. Chaney! What the Sedonian people think of Matteo's speech, whether Matteo and Raia get together, the eventual fate of the Narayana project... you're not done, my friend. Not yet. ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another world May 14, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the author's first book. I hope with all my heart he writes more. The world is vivid and full of life and color. I felt like I had a deep connection and understanding of these characters in the slums who fight every day for simple survival. The world is gorgeously painted, character are thoughtful and diverse who moved the story in a realistic way.

I found myself so absorbed in this world that everything else faded. I watched the chases, fights, tears and felt the cries of triumph and desperation. I made myself stop reading at time because I didn't want it to end. made this book last 1 week, and found myself craving it like an addict.

A strong, poignant mind painted this world. I hope he gives us more for the beautiful world he made is broken, but fighting in the face of all opposition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good book April 28, 2013
By Richard
Format:Paperback
Son of Sedonia takes place in a futuristic, dystopian society where the elite live in a city with all the comforts technology provides and everyone else struggles in the slums outside the walled city. However, unrest is close at hand...

Okay, so that is quite the vague summary, but for very good reason. The book starts out with a bang. I mean I was shocked. From the beginning of the book I was hooked. Therefore I can't even really set up the scene for you because that would even be a huge spoiler. Bottom line, this is a really good story and I am actually surprised it wasn't picked up by a major publisher. Maybe author's choice? Anyway, in my opinion, the story was well thought out and I cared about what happened to the characters.

I can't resist making one random comment though. I don't know if the author was inspired or influenced by other books or movies, but there is one scene that brought me back to the 1980 movie Flash Gordon. After you read Son of Sedonia, maybe you can comment and tell me what you think.

There are five parts of the book and I admit I did not find part three to be as exciting as the others. Again, I don't want to go into details and ruin it for you, because I absolutely recommend this book, but I guess I was hoping for a little more detail. When you get to part three, if you feel the same way, don't worry because part four picks right back up. And the ending... LOVED IT! I did not see it coming and I absolutely love when that happens!

I thought the writing and character development was great. While the reader will immediately recognize an obvious, and not traditional, characteristic in Chaney's writing, do not doubt for a second that it is indeed intentional. And it works.
