5.0 out of 5 stars this release kicks!!
Son of the South is the rerelease of, Toy Caldwell (1992 Cabin Fever), Toys only solo studio recording. Can't You See (1998 Pet Rock), is the only live solo release by Toy. Both records are very impressive and showcase Toys varried songwriting and unusual guitar style. I highly recommend these recordings and are a must to any southern rock enthusiasts collection. I'm not sure who these guys are or how it got to the point where they wanted my feedback. But I'm sure somebody would like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cookin, August 9, 2000
This review is from: Son of the South (Audio CD)
Well this album just cooks. I miss this style of southern rock. Toy was Marshal Tucker the other members were absolutly fantastic , but I don't know of anyone who could write a song as good as he did. If you buy this cd you must buy Toy's Live Can't you see. Just listening to them makes you realize what a talent he truly was.

This is a fantastic CD and it's available brand new for [...]. Every fan of American Southern music should own a copy. Toy Caldwell was one of our greatest guitarists and songwriters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Son of the South, March 31, 2000

This is a fantastic CD. I personally think the Marshall Tucker Band was a group of guys that thrived on each others talent. While Toy put a great collection of songs together and sang them with his heart and soul, there was just somethin special about MTB. From one Ol'Cowboy to another, Toy's greatness lives on.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best in Years!, March 1, 2000
This review is from: Son of the South (Audio CD)
This CD is the best MTB/Toy Caldwell music I have heard in years! I Hear the South Callin Me is a great mix of Toy and a mix of instrmentation. This CD also has a "new" Live "Can't You See" cut from Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam that smokes! Get this CD if you love Southern Rock and Roll or even if you just love great guitar!

True this is a rerelease of Toy's one and only solo album and true this album sounds as an extention of the 'MARSHAL TUCKER BAND'.And yet this southern boy struts his stuff. From the opening tune, "I HEAR THE SOUTH CALLING ME" to the laid back "NIGHT LIFE" with Willie Nelson. After listening to this CD I have put Toy in my top ten of guitar players in the world. And I put this album in my top ten of blues/country. Even in 1992 when most of the album was recorded, the music still sounds as if recorded and issued yesterday. Someday we will know if this music will pass the test of time.I as a biased fan think it will. A number of songs were recorded much earlier with the 'MARSHALL TUCKER BAND' and were given another lease on life with this release. Try out "THIS OL' COWBOY" and "CAN'T YOU SEE". Give credit to Tony Heatherly for doing a wonderful job wth lead vocals on "TEXAS ON MY MIND". One last thought: If Toy Caldwell had lived to the present day, what music would they have blessed us with

this CD is simply amazing; don't need to be a southern rock fan to enjoy ALL the great tunes here; for those who don't know- Mr. Caldwell was a founding member of THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND.

5.0 out of 5 stars MakeItaHundred, March 30, 2007
This review is from: Son of the South (Audio CD)
This historical and emotional record of musical genius within the country-rock genre is without rival. It comes welcomed but surely overdue for re-release and I find unjust motives. When I was a soldier at Fort Bragg, North Carolina during its initial release, I found a unique connection to the Marshall Tucker legacy that would take me on a continued musical journey that has now lasted nearly fourty-five years. But I feel rage when asked to part with thirty-five dollars for a single CD. Who is kidding who? Is music also becoming a privelege of the rich? Screw the music business. No wonder there are pirates!!
