The Austin City Limits is a great DVD. But I wanted to alert fans to the recent concert recorded at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. by NPR (10-21-05). It can be downloaded in its entirety on NPR's All Songs Considered website. It's a kick-ass concert from beginning to end. All the old favorites and tracks off the new album are here. Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise to come across... July 1, 2005
I hadn't looked here in some time to see if there was anything new by Son Volt. Imagine my surprise when I saw this newly-released DVD!

Truth be told, I couldn't even wait long enough for Amazon to ship it out - I got in my pickup and drove 45 minutes to the nearest book store that had it on the shelf : - )))

What an awesome CD - it was my first glimpse at the band live, and like my esteemed fellow reviewer said - the sound quality is EXCEPTIONAL. I work from home on my computer all day long and have music cranking the whole time. Needless to say, this DVD is now in heavy rotation! Now all we need is the CD version of the music so I can crank it out there too.

I thank ASL for releasing this - I remember the first time I saw Merle Haggard live on TV there. Great stuff, and they do indeed have 20+ years of gold in there. Hope they keep opening up the vault - maybe they have Uncle Tupelo hidden in there somewhere?

Anyway, enough rambling. Buy this one and get ready to enjoy it immensely!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cookin' May 24, 2005
Jeez , this DVD is damn good. Son Volt in '96 , live and cookin'.I would have paid just for the superb version of Back Into Your World but it's all good.Old-Timers like myself even get glorious renditions of the Tupelo classics True To Life and Chickamauga , such joy !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Blend May 25, 2006
This DVD is Son Volt at its best. It rocks - hard - on songs like Chickamauga, Route and Picking Up the Signal. But they can slow it down on songs like Too Early, Windfall and Tear-Stained Eye and pull them off with perfection. While this short concert leaves you wanting more (the new DVD has twice as many songs) it highlights the early career of Son Volt.

A must for fans of Son Volt and Alt-Country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very strong August 4, 2006
By Xavier
This is a very good performance by Son Volt of their early and mid-career songs (mostly from Trace and Straightaways, which most consider to be their two best records). The songs are good, the sound quality is excellent, and the editing and camera angles are revealing but not obtrusive. Jay Farrar is a taciturn performer, he basically stands and sings, but he's in fine voice, and the musicianship from the whole group shines. If you like SV, or have heard of them and want to see what they're about, you can't do much better than this DVD. Pick up Okemah and the Melody of Riot, which contains two bonus DVDs, for more good Son Volt audio/video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent show! August 15, 2005
I miss these days! I like Jay's current stuff but Boquist was a heck of a musician. He demonstrates his diverse abilities on this set with rockin guitar, banjo, electric slide, and a fiddle. Is there anything with strings he can't play? Jay looks like such a youngster but already commanded a presence with his unique voice and complex lyricism. I figured out how he plays 'Out of the Picture' by watching the DVD. If you like Son Volt or Uncle Tupelo, this one will make you smile over and over.

there's no denying Jay and his controlled wisdom.

what lies behind those eyes hidden deep in self consciousness

a six string belief

this video is the best of the ACL series yet

I should know - I have them all

it seems anyone doing the ACL show is always trying very hard to get it just right and I appreciate the best performance an artist can give. No matter what they do to achieve it.

Jay pulls this one off just right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible music May 8, 2005
Hell yeah...I'll be the first one to give this baby 5 stars...Son Volt is an incredible live act with Jay Farrar from the legendary band Uncle Tupelo serving up incredible songs of americana and the working man. He alone made the genre of alt-country and what better place to see his chops than on the famous Austin City Limits stage. I always wondered why ACL never released more of their libary for sale on DVD. They have 20+ years of some amazing performances in their vault and hopefully this is the first of many more to come. Here you get the full performance including songs not aired on TV. With classic such as "Windfall" and "Tear Stained Eye" to the amazing "Left of Slide", this will be a DVD that will fit well and be played many times in my collection. Keep em coming!
