The aims of the book - written by a practising engineer for practising engineers - are to provide an understanding of the basic principles of sonar and, to develop formulae and "rules of thumb" for sonar design and performance analysis. Ashley Waite uses his long experience in the design, trials and performance analysis of sonar systems to provide practical guidance and solutions to problems encountered by sonar engineers and technicians.

The books divides into the following parts:
* Equipment parameters: the motion of sound in an elastic medium; definitions of sound intensity and source level; the use of projector arrays to increase the source level; the use of hydrophone arrays to improve the signal to noise ratio of a wanted sound.
* The propagation of sound in the sea and the backgrounds to detection: spreading and absorption losses; propagation modes and simple modelling; noise and reverberation; the sonar equations
* Practical sonar systems: passive and active sonar systems; passive broadband, narrowband, intercept and communications (as a special case of intercept) sonars; active sonars for the detection of submarines, mines and torpedoes.
Sonar for Practising Engineers, third edition, covers all aspects of sonar systems and has extensive worked examples. No prior knowledge of sonar is assumed and the physical principles and mathematics will be readily understood by engineers, technicians and students of underwater acoustics. New to this edition, are end-of-chapter exercises and solutions for self assessment and training.

About the Author

ASHLEY WAITE retired from the UK Ministry of Defence in 1990 after 40 years of Underwater Warfare Research at Portland. He then joined Thomson Marconi Sonar (now Thales Underwater Systems Limited) as a Consultant for a further 10 years. He still maintains an involvement with sonar in a freelance capacity.

There are many myths regarding sonar, in both civilian and military applications. The perhaps best known ones are provided by Tom Clancy in his book/movie "The Hunt for Red October". While sonarman Jones and his $40 million computer make great additions to that story, they have little to do with reality.

This book, on the other hand, has everything to do with reality. It describes the working principles of sonar in as simple terms as possible. The explanations and mathematics are kept on a level where any electrical engineer can follow it, and the material is still general enough so that even renowned researchers on underwater acoustics can learn from it.

To me, one of the greatest assets with this book is that it so clearly shows

- what real-life sonars do
- how they do it
- why they do it like that
- what problems are encountered

This is information that is hard to come by elsewhere, and give rise to all sorts of speculations when lacking. The book is as relevant to navy sonars as civilian ones.

This might not be the premier book on Sonar, but it's the best I've found for beginners in the field. It's simple and to the point, and doesn't use long, drawn out mathematical explanations of the forces at work. That makes it perfect for people trying to understand the basic concepts. However, it's not the most useful desk reference, because sometimes the mathematical explanations and models in books like Urick are needed. This book provides the basis for even understanding what those models are trying to explain.

Highly recommended.

This book goes into good detail, and even covers much of the math equations involved, but is geared very much towards practical applications...
