An ordinary family in modern Japan is caught in the throes of inert pride, stymied by their own inability to communicate honestly with one another. Lies lead to suspicion, until the veneer of their civility shatters, with tragic consequences.
Father cannot tell his family that he gets laid off, so puts on his suit and pretends to go to work. Mother stays home and makes donuts, but nobody eat. Older son is going to join U.S. forces, and I, a youngest son in my family strives to study the piano against his father's wishes, leading to another lie for the family.
