It doesn't get much better than this. Lara St.John performing Bach is my idea of musical perfection. The only thing better would be to hear it live.

Let me start by saying that I despise the harpsichord. I have Bach's violin/keyboard sonatas featuring a modern piano in place of the harpsy, and these are wonderful recordings. Now enter Lara St John's brilliant violin/harp pairings. Two of the pieces are BWV 1014 & 1016 for violin/harpsichord transcribed to violin/harp, while the other two are BWV 1020 & 1030 for flute/harpsichord, also transcribed for violin/harp. The encore is the lovely "Siciliano" from BWV 1031. All of these pieces take on a new beauty in the hands of Lara and her accompaniment with harp. A whole new way (and to my ears a superior way) of hearing these wonderful sonatas!

Violinist Lara St. John performs several of J.S. Bach's sonatas for violin and harpsichord in transcriptions for violin and harp. She has said that for these pieces she finds the harpsichord rather unsubtle in accompaniment and the modern piano heavy-handed. The harp, on the other hand, she feels better suits the spirit of the music. After listening to these unique, though not entirely inauthentic, transcriptions for violin and harp, I'd have to agree with her. The results are not just enchanting but sometimes stunning, turning familiar tunes into welcome new creations.

Up until the later days of the pianoforte, keyboard instruments did not have the power of the modern piano, so recordings of older pieces with the piano can get a little bit off balance. The choice of the harp for the keyboard part in these pieces is superb.

As is to be expected, St. John's rendition of Bach is nicely done. And Langlamet's harp is lively and strong, rather than tinkly and precious. If you have an hour to seek a bit of inner peace and quiet joy, kicking back and listening to this on your iPod is time well spent.
