Editorial Reviews

(1971 'Sonet') (67:51/15) Aufgenommen in London. Includes Dupree's response to the war in Vietnam. This CD version contains four previously unissued sides, plus an alternate take. Excellent sound quality, digitally re-mastered. New and old liner notes and a Sonet blues label story. CHAMPION JACK DUPREE - piano/voc, PETER CURTLEY - gtr, PAUL ROWAN - gtr, BENNY GALLAGHER - bass, HUEY FLINT - drums.

Champion Jack, one of my favorite musicians ever (any style or instrument), is here in superb form both at vocals, lyrics and at his unique, unbeatable piano playing. You'll never get tired of listening to this one. The band is OK, but in my opinion this is simply the very best Dupree's recording with European musicians (and he did "some"). Forget John Mayall and other "legends"!

I stumbled across Dupree online while listening to Pandora and I'll never look back. Here is a treasure that has been hidden in plain sight. The band and especially piano is fantastic - as good as it gets. I am a real blues fan of all sorts and this really blew me away - listen to this over and over and over!!!!!!

Where has he been with all the Blues renaissance - between Scorceesee , and so many others on PBS and then DVD , influences of the greats like Dylan and Young , where has he been ? Let's make sure he maintains a respectable place in the annals of blues music.
