5.0 out of 5 stars Emmotionally memorable...a true pleasure!
In my About You page, I once said emmotional stories were favorites. The statement doesn't change with this book. Not unlike MICK HARTE WAS HERE by Barbra Park (another favorite of simmalar gerene), it tells the tale of a preteen girl coping with many things. This book, however, is multilayered. In MICK, Phoebe copes only with death, while SONG's Dodie copes with...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Suitable for Children
I wish I had looked at this book before my 12 year old daughter read it. While the content of the story is worthy of writing and knowing about, the manner in which this one was written leaves a lot to be desired. This story could have been told much more delicately and more suited to a younger audience, for which it is targeted. The author's choice of words in...

5.0 out of 5 stars Emmotionally memorable...a true pleasure!, May 4, 2000
In my About You page, I once said emmotional stories were favorites. The statement doesn't change with this book. Not unlike MICK HARTE WAS HERE by Barbra Park (another favorite of simmalar gerene), it tells the tale of a preteen girl coping with many things. This book, however, is multilayered. In MICK, Phoebe copes only with death, while SONG's Dodie copes with rejection, friendship, death, and starting over.

Also, the book is truthful about handicaps... it doesn't hide some things and show some others. It shows everything at one of the higher levels it can be shown at. Jeffrey is like many, including me, and Dodie reminds me of a few special friends.

A touching novel that comes highly reccomended!

ALSO RECCOMENDED: Mick Harte Was Here by Barbra Park

5.0 out of 5 stars A Song for Jeffrey, February 9, 2000

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I laughed and cried through this book; the characters had me sold right away, and the story proved my instincts right. I like an author who makes me feel the emotions of the characters, but who stays in command of the story so the emotions don't carry me away. This author did just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Book about everyday Situations!, November 21, 2000
By
A Song for Jeffrey is a magnificent book. It talks about things that happen everyday. It was a little sad when you heard about what Jeffery went though all the time with muscular dystrophy. This book proves that all people, even with diseases, can have many talents. I'd encourage anybody, even adults, to read this great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Realisticly Wonderful!, April 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Song for Jeffrey (American Girl (Hardcover Unnumbered)) (Hardcover)
This book is the most honest book I have read about people with handicaps. It made me cry, even, because I knew even though this was fiction, the same thing could happen for real... And that a life could be jepordized in one instant. And then that his or her friends would be depressed in a way they had never been depressed before.... A five-star first-rate novel, a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars I really liked these characters. They're funny!!, September 5, 1999
By A Customer
These kids are not perfect children from perfect families. They're funny and they're real.I liked them enormously and found myself laughing and yes, crying with them. They could be my kids. It's sad but ultimately very satisfying. I hope she writes more. Thank you, Miss Foland

4.0 out of 5 stars The Key to Friendship, May 22, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Song for Jeffrey (American Girl (Hardcover Unnumbered)) (Hardcover)
A Song for Jeffrey is written by Constance M. Foland. A girl named Dodie is lonely, bored, and ignored. Her parents are divorced and they fight all the time. She feels like nobody wants her. But then a new kid moves in named Jeffery.
This author is trying to tell you that even if people are different it doesn't mean they can't be a good friend because they can be better than a lot of others. So you can't judge people if they have disabilities. This book made me feel like there was something I was missing in life like drawing that you feel like you're in the picture. When you look in it you also see the picture moving.
Will the new kid become her new best friend? Will Dodie find a new friend and not be Jeffery's friend anymore? Will Dodie ever have a new friend? If you are interested in this type of story check out A Song for Jeffery!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever, March 25, 2007
A Kid's Review
It is about a girl who tries to figure out life and how some things are not always perfect, she also starts to understnd why some people act the way they do. This book should be read by kids 10 and up. It is an emotional roller coaster, it also has some great advise for people's life.

I wish I had looked at this book before my 12 year old daughter read it. While the content of the story is worthy of writing and knowing about, the manner in which this one was written leaves a lot to be desired. This story could have been told much more delicately and more suited to a younger audience, for which it is targeted. The author's choice of words in describing the young boy's fear of dying was crude and much too descriptive for younger children, especially those who have not given much thought to the subject yet. Not many children have. If I could rate this book at 0 stars, I would. I am very surprised that American Girl would publish such an unsuitable and inappropriate book for children.

The book featured a special friendship between a bored girl and a boy her age with muscular distrophy. This is a great book for anyone, not just girls.
