"... Fr Barry's crisp writing style belies the profound message that is just below the surface. Or, maybe it illustrates it! Simple often is better. To really understand God you must first empty yourself of the "noise" and then let him come softly to you..." --Alan Hardtarfer of San Diego
"...The memoirs and recounts of Martinson's cultural journey should help shed some light on the Yami tribe's culture and people. It's not only travel writing and cultural analysis; it's a personal insight into one of Taiwan's unique local cultures..." --By Logan Paige, China Post July 2006
Product Description
Father Barry went to Orchid island as a Jesuit seminarian in 1971. After studying the Chinese language for two years in Taiwan, and as part of his training for the priesthood, he spent a year living and working with the Yami people. This book is the story of that year. It is a collection of impressions - a song perhaps - meant less for the anthropologist than for the poet, the dreamer, or anyone else as interested as he is in sharing lives so different from their own.
