5.0 out of 5 stars Threadgill the Composer, September 21, 2000
By

This review is from: Song Out of My Trees (Audio CD)
Since Threadgill only palys on two of these tracks, its primarily about the compostitions. That doesn't mean these players aren't wonderful. Ed Cherry and Brandon Ross have been reinventing what guitar can do in a jazz band for some time now and Meyers plays some interesting harpsichord on one track and her great moving organ on another and accordian/harmonuim master Tony Cedras shows uo for a track.

At close to ten minutes and containing powerful but odd vocals, Grief is the centerpiece of this set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique Threads, February 10, 2012
By
This came out soon after the Very Very Circus CD's and was a hint at bold/strange new directions from Mr. Threadgill. Tracks 1 & 5 are the most "normal", both played by almost straight quintets, though in fact the electric sound (esp. Amina Claudine Myers' organ on "Trees") is uniquely Threadgill's, between gospel and free-bop. The instrumentation on tracks 2-3-4 is even more creative (cellos, acoustic guitars) and the music is harder to digest. But there's an amazing moment halfway through "Crea" where Ted Daniel enters with a "hunting horn" - you don't often hear stuff like that on jazz records, or anywhere... and that's why Thread is one of a kind.
