Editorial Reviews

Review

Sixteen-year-old Maddie Bride starts at a new school in the countryside. She knows she'll have to deal with sports obsessed rich kids, cliques, and pressure. She doesn't expect myths from the shadowy past to be taking place around her. Not only are the legends unfinished. They're starting all over again.

Her new classmate, Eddy Moon, is awkward, and shy, and has lived a life of hardship and loneliness. As his strength and sense of purpose become more and more striking, Maddy comes to believe that he may have a place in the stories. At the same time she realises that the place she wants is by his side.

Closeness to Eddy brings Maddy another shocking realisation. Not only is he a mythic hero returned to life in the countryside, but maybe she too has a place in the legends. Torn between normality and her attraction to the magnificent Eddy Moon, Maddy has to decide who she is, who she is going to be, and whether stories must end the same way twice.

This is the first book in the LEVELS series. The second is called 'Rock Anthem' and the third 'Lullaby of Lies.' For more information go to jdfield.blogspot.com

From the Author

JD Field sucked at being a teenager.

It wasn't until ten years later she realised that was okay. You don't have to be good at everything, and she's much better at being an adult. She travels around eastern Europe, obsesses about whales, makes up silly dances, and eats noodles dry, out of the packet.

JD Field made up for her horrible school years and being a sporting disaster by creating characters who are amazing at sport, but have a terrible time at school. They get abducted by witches and attacked with swords. She feels bad about it, but not bad enough to stop writing the stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Totally Captivated by Song to Wake to October 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
WOW!! I was totally captivated by this book. I absolutely LOVE the story told throughout this book and the reference to one of my FAVORITE legends.
J.D. Field has taken a story that has been written many times and made it modern with its own twists that grab a hold of you from the beginning of the book and keep you enticed all the way through. The book was paced perfectly giving me answers exactly when I needed them and then still leaving questions for me to ponder as we near the end of the book. Of course, since this is a series, not all of my questions are answered, but I am now so eager for the next book to reach my hands I know I will devour it!!
I can't really go in to details about the story b/c it would give so much away and I don't want to give any spoilers. I can definitely say that my interest was intrigued and then I was hooked!!
Great read and high recommend!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stand Out Among the Repetitions November 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an avid reader, I have become bored with the repetitious themes that YA authors are putting out - i.e. werewolves, vampires, love triangles, etc. J.D. Field's novel, however, stood out. His novel contains an interesting group of characters and an interesting story. I have only read one other novel regarding this story line (don't want to spoil the surprise), and this one far surpassed the other. The main characters are gripping and mysterious, but Field doesn't keep you in suspense too long; he's careful to insure that he gives you enough clues to keep you anxiously wondering and guessing without becoming frustrated at being left in the dark. I would highly recommend this novel to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! October 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a wonderful beginning to a series and I was sucked in from the very beginning. It had a good balance of romance and action. I also think it was original and unpredictable (I haven't read a lot of fantasy though so maybe I just don't know). One other thing, I really liked the heroine, Maddy. She figured things out when a smart person should. I can't stand it when the clues are all there and the chick just can't put the pieces together to figure out what the heck is going on. Maddy was not this way and that was awesome!! I loved it! I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Some spoilers:
I got part one as a free download and after a slow beginning, really liked the story. Once Madeline is situated at her new school, the action starts to pick up. Madeline or "Maddy" is confused on who she really is and "tries on" different personalities in order to fit in. She is a swimmer and quickly makes the team finding the water extremely easy to navigate. She has a crush on a tall, muscled boy named Eddy who will not acknowledge her but continues to rescue her from feral dogs that were chasing her and a perverted taxi cab driver. Maddy knows there is something not quite right about both her and Eddy, but knows that whenever she calls his name to help her, he arrives.

I enjoyed part one of this series and paid the extra to get part two.

Would I/Did I buy it? Free Download
Would I read it again? No
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

Then Part Two:;

Spoilers:
After reading part one, I had to know what happens, so I downloaded the book that included parts one and two and started where the one left off. I feel stupid, but I did not catch the whole Arthurian/Camelot theme in the first half and was somewhat discouraged by where the story went. I really did not want to read the tragic life of Arthur repeated with characters that I cared about and was hoping were going to find happiness together. Why in the world would you have him bound by fate to commit the same exact mistakes for a second time? And to realize that Gweneviere will show up soon to confuse him away from Maddy and then cheat on him. I really hope that doesn't happen.

So, if you love the Arthurian legends with a younger, modern crowd, this book is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A welcome departure from the mainstream March 18, 2012
By Bramble
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded Part 1 of a Song To Wake To and a few other books simply because they were free. Most of the others have been deleted from my Kindle without being read the whole way through. This one is staying! As soon as I finished Part 1 I bought the entire book, and when I finished that I immediately bought Rock Anthem.
Like a lot of people I'm over the vampires and werewolves which are currently saturating YA books, therefore JD Field's books are a refreshing change. I really didn't know what to expect from Eddy Moon so discovering his true identity was really pleasing, and Madeleine's ancestry was a fabulous surprise!
I'm very much looking forward to finding out how the story ends for this pair, but at the moment I'll just enjoy the journey as JD Field spins the tale.

2.0 out of 5 stars frustration September 23, 2012
By Turtles
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I stopped reading this at 88%. I don't want to call this a self-publish issue, but sometimes you still need an editor! This could have garnered more stars from me if it was not such a mess. I felt like 3 people wrote different parts of the book. It wavered from bare bones, passionless descriptions to conversation dumps. The writing style and pace were all over the place, the lack of consistency lulls you to read more when you get to a good patch, then to threaten your innocent Kindle with spine-crackage during the bad points. There were also points in the book where a character would be introduced, and I thought they would become important to the plot, but they were just dropped after a couple chapters, barely mentioned in passing after a quarter of the book. The hot/cold of the main characters was frustrating.

The book had it's good points, I thought the King Arthur bit was good. Merlin developed a school populated with influential people across the world, there were "houses" on the campus with Camelot reigning supreme. Arthur slept through the centuries waiting to be awoken when he was needed. He wakes up a child and eventually go to the Levels school, known as Eddy (weird middle name) Moon. The girl is Madeline, moved from London and the incarnation of the Lady of the Lake. Madeline makes moves to help Eddy including getting him the school sword and leadership of Camelot house. She advises him on being a leader. But he pushes her away since he is fated for a Queen and cannot tempt himself with loving her.

Other than Merlin, who was only mentioned by name in passing, no other traditional characters were known...

More About the Author

I love travelling (especially in Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Romania). I believe that Dawsons Creek is deeply underated. If it was allowed I would eat bacon three times a day.
I like to invent silly dances and embarrass my friends. Basketball is good, as are whales.
The Levels Series sprung out of my love for old myths and legends, boarding school stories, the Somerset countryside and superheroes. I wanted to write about them all at once, so I did. Now I'm just constantly frustrated that it's taking me so long to get the sequels out. Don't worry, though, they are coming. About twelve of them...
