The Song of Roland is major French chivalrous epic, dating from the late eleventh-century. It recounts the deeds of a knight of Charlemagne fighting in the Pyrenees during the Frankish invasion of Moorish Spain in 778. In this medieval ballad about the battle between the Franks and Moors, the hero Roland fights his advisory the evil Ganelon. Historians think it is possible that the title character of the 12th century Song of Roland, which recounts his final stand against the Vascones during the Battle of Roncevaux Pass, is based on a real person who died in that battle,
