Wiederkehr (A Tree Full of Angels and Seasons of Your Heart) is a Benedictine nun who leads workshops and retreats. Using the parable of the sower as her touchstone, she has now written a guidebook for use in a personal, spiritual exercise that can be conducted either in solitude or with a group. Split into three parts of 10 days each, Song offers a focus for each day. Each focus is followed by a meditation, a reading from the Christian Bible with a reflection upon that reading, a brief poem, a "songline" (i.e., "a verbal pathway of the spirit"), a prayer and a journal entry. The final chapters present a communal service and resources. The book's unvarying format, insistently organic metaphors and somewhat overripe prose quickly become tiresome, but the volume may nevertheless prove valuable for personal or group study.

If you have been looking for a way to practice lectio divina and pray with the scriptures, this is the best book for you. Set up in a retreat format, each day suggests a short reading and song line to keep you focused throughout the day. The guidelines for contemplation, meditation, and journaling are perfect for those needing help getting started. She also shares her own journaling and prayers for examples. This book was the inspiration that I needed to examine myself and God's teachings truthfully and with the help of a wonderful spirtiual leader. It also provides ways to use the book in a group retreat.

A beautiful book that gives you permission to move at your own pace. Macrina's honesty in showing the reader her most intimate thoughts is both refreshing and humbling. It is a book to be savored slowly and often.

If you have been searching for a spiritual resource that can help you to get in touch with your inner longing for the Divine, this is it. Written in a warm, loving, lyrical style, the author leads one in using lectio divina, the ancient monastic tool for studying Scripture. One need not leave home to make a meaningful private retreat, as well as to expand the retreat to include other spiritual seekers, if desired.
