Review

"A triumphant book...A true story truly told." -The New York Times Book Review

From the Publisher

Cassie's mother told her, "Times are hard, honey." With jobs scarce, Cassie's daddy had gone to Louisiana to lay track for the railroads to get money to feed his children back in Mississippi. That was when the trouble started. Mr. Andersen dared cheat Big Ma by forcing her to sell the giant old trees in the forest surrounding the house. The trees were Cassie's friends, singing her a special song that others insisted was only the wind. What would happen now with daddy away? --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is an excellent book to introduce Black history and literary techniques. The author paints vivid pictures of the scenery that are easily pictured in one's mind. She makes excellent use of similes and comparisons. When read aloud to children, they can easily draw pictures to illustrate the setting and the characters. It is an excellent springboard to discussion of Black history and American history during the Depression.

The novella Song of the Trees is a dynamite little story. As a teacher I find that a lot of children of all races do not realize what the depression era was all about. Mildred Taylor presents wholesome heroes in the Logan family. She addresses tough topics such as racism and segregation in all her novels. The themes of bravery, family, and standing up for what is right are in this little story and in all of her stories. Mildred Taylor's books should be on every family's bookshelves.

I thought that this was a pretty good book and that I would recommend it to someone else. In this story there are these black people that own land thats a forest and these white people want to cut almost all the trees in the forest so they said that they would give them money but since they cut down more than theypaid for so one of the kids went to get there dad. he came back and set up dynimites all over and was going to kill himself and the lumber man if they didn't get out right then.
