This review is from: SONG OF THE SIREN - A Parapsychological Odyssey
written in 1977, "song of the siren" is stanley krippner's odyssey through parapsychology and esp experiements. krippner's goal is to bring psychical research to mainstream science. it seems all his life krippner has been interested in parapsychological phenomena. krippner's travels take him all over the country and to the soviet union, where psychical studies were taken very seriously (and successfully) and brazil for the macumba (drum and candle ceremonies) rituals. i did enjoy his travel and studies of the psychic surgeons in the philipines. krippner discuses how there were a lot of "fake" psychic surgeries, there were also a lot of surgeries that appeared valid. he reported that scientists did research and found this to be true, but did not publish any reports due to fear of losing their reputation. krippner has a lot to say about william nolan's observations about philipine surgery too that is rather interesting. krippner studied and associated with the likes of j.b. rhine, timothy leary, astrobiologist michael gauquelin and gopi krishna, to getting help from the grateful dead and the holy modal rounders. what drags this book down is the studies. if you are into the sciences, research as statistics, then you might find all the case studies interesting, but for the casual reader, no. and he doesn't break the studies up with a lot of information. it's just one study after another. i appreciate all the labor he has done to make psychical research respected and esp proven, but the style it is presented makes a dull read. if you are interested in the blending of parapsychology, and the sciences, try the writings of charles tart. i do give mr. krippner credit for all the labor and groundbreaking work he has done to make us all more aware of how connected we really are in this universe.
