Book Description

1995
This work aims to present all the information available on taxonomy, morphology and distribution of Turkish songbirds, and compares it with similar data from other countries in the Middle East and Southeast Europe. Characteristics and measurements of all the subspecies of passerine birds of the region are given. Much of the data presented here was collected in the course of the 20-years' research programme for "Birds of the Western Palearctic". The author's intention is for people to become more aware that a bird seen in Turkey or elsewhere is not just a member of a widespread species, but may form part of a discrete population with a restricted range, characterized by its own morphological features. It could form a separate unit distinguishable from other populations which, because of human interference, could become irreversibly lost. The maintenance of the world's biodiversity is not just a matter of preserving species on a continental scale, but also conserving subspecies and populations at a local level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good scientific review of subspecies and distributions, July 6, 2008

This review is from: Songbirds of Turkey Pb (Paperback)
Basics: 1995, softcover, 240 pages, 156 species, 145 atlas maps, no illustrations

As noted in the subtitle of this book, this is strictly an atlas covering the passerine birds of Turkey. More specifically, it covers only the breeding passerines. There are no illustrations of any birds. In all, 156 species are covered alongside 145 maps. The primary point of this book is to visually identify and map where each of the subspecies of a bird is located throughout the varied geography of this country.

The information presented for each bird is very thorough and does a superb job of covering the geographic races and distributions of the birds. Both the distribution and habitat are outlined very well. The strength of the book lies in the maps and in the section on geographical variation for each bird. This latter section can be as long as a full page or more. The subspecies text includes detailed body measurements and very detailed physical descriptions.

This book will appeal to birders with a greater interest on scientific examination, data, and subspecies detail.
