Biography

As a producer, bandleader, arranger, songwriter, session musician and all-around musical eminence, Allen Toussaint impacted the New Orleans music scene of the Sixties in much the same way that Dave Bartholomew had in the Fifties. Toussaint, in fact, apprenticed under Bartholomew at sessions for such legends as Fats Domino, so it was a seamless transition when the R&B baton passed between ... Editorial Reviews

New Orleans musicians laid the cornerstone for a large swath of American music, and Allen Toussaint is among the city s most gifted players. As a composer, arranger, producer, pianist and singer, Allen has created an enduring body of work that includes local hits by Irma Thomas and Lee Dorsey; songs covered by Glen Campbell, the Rolling Stones and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss; national hits by Ernie K-Doe and LaBelle; and collaborations with Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello, all in addition to his own recording career. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama in July, 2013.

Songbook presents Allen Toussaint as many of his fans have longed to hear him, in an intimate solo setting, performing many of his best-loved songs. His piano playing is a marvel, with its orchestral conception and effortless New Orleans syncopation. But what comes across most strongly is the warmth of Allen s performance. The gentle Creole lilt in his voice brings a resonance and a smile to his songs, rivaling the versions he produced for others. Recorded live at Joe s Pub in New York, the deluxe edition of Songbook includes a DVD with backstage and studio interviews.

DVD track list is as follows:
Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further
Sweet Touch Of Love
Holy Cow
Get Out Of My Life, Woman
St. James Infirmary
Shrimp Po-Boy, Dressed
Soul Sister
All These Things
We Are America/Yes We Can
The Optimism Blues
Old Records
Certain Girl Medley: Certain Girl/ Mother-in-Law/ Fortune Teller/ Working In The Coal Mine
It s A New Orleans Thing
I Could Eat Crawfish Everyday
There s No Place Like New York
Southern Nights

Also includes backstage and studio interviews and extra studio performance

...it seems like something like this would have been done already, right? I mean, the idea is simple: Plop Allen Toussaint down at a piano in front of a lively but appreciative audience and let him loose. The result is positively charming for the casual listener, an invaluable history lesson for the neophyte, and an absolute master class in New Orleans R&B for the dedicated.

Do we really need to go into the backstory? Toussaint is a titan of New Orleans soul/R&B, writing, producing, and arranging a seemingly endless stream of classics hits for way too many artists to list here...his impact on popular music is vast, but much of it bears the name of others. He always seemed content to work in the shadows and let the spotlight shine elsewhere. He was coaxed into a solo career in the late '60s and '70s, as documented by Rhino Handmade's "Complete Warner Recordings" set...

Over the years, Toussaint's own records have been hit-or-miss for me: His voice isn't capable of the grit of someone like Lee Dorsey or the emotional whallop of Irma Thomas (both of whom he wrote and produced some tremendous records for), and sometimes the performances lacked a certain spark. Still, he's such a witty and imaginative writer and absolutely majestic pianist (giving the rollicking syncopation of Professor Longhair a certain regal grace) that he's rarely dull. And in concert, he comes alive -- the '70s-vintage live set on "Complete Warner Recordings" was by far the best part of that package.

This disk features live recordings cut in 2009 during his many solo gigs at Joe's Pub in New York City, where he was residing post-Katrina (he's since returned to New Orleans). His voice just grows in honeyed richness, and the live setting beautifully conveys his generous spirit and relaxed elegance.

I have only watched the DVD at this point but what I saw is terrific. I believe the CD adds 4 additional songs. My wife and I saw Mr. Toussaint at Joe's Pub a number of years ago and we loved it. However, he was not doing the additional narration to Southern Nights that he does on the DVD. That alone is worth the price of admission. The narration explains how the song came about and what was important to him growing up. We were riveted during that segment. The music is timeless and his piano playing is a joy to listen to. Another musical treasure from a master.

Put Allen in a room...with a intimate audience, have him sing his favorites from 40 years of songwriting - throw in a story or two, and it adds up to a great hour.

Stripped down genius - guaranteed to hold your attention. Just a man and his piano.

My only irritation is that I didn't buy the deluxe edition, as it just seems the CD ended too early

Although this only came out recently, I would consider this a necessity in everyone's collection.

Many may not realize the impact that Mr. Toussaint has had on the world. As a producer and songwriter, he has worked with legends like Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey, Elvis Costello, and Dr. John. Not to mention that his songs have been covered by the likes of the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds. He is truly a legend.

The album is a live album that Mr. Toussaint recorded in New York City in 2009 and features him alone on his piano as he runs through many of the classics of his career and even throws in some other gems. Toussaint's performance is brilliant and he truly gracious when he performs. The performance even features some new songs.

It would be difficult to pick what the highlight of this album are but two tracks that stand out are the "Certain Girl" Medley
and the 13 minute long version of "Southern Nights". I would highly recommend picking this album up.

It should be noted that the deluxe edition CD/DVD version is well worth the extra few dollars. The DVD features a different performance in New York City from the same period and features a slightly different set list. Both shows are equally good. The DVD also features some bonus features including a brilliant interview with Mr. Toussaint that is both entertaining and insightful.

As a keyboard player, what I like the most about Allen Toussaint's music is his masterful use of Gospel licks and phrases. His music is always a joy to hear. I play it in my car and it never fails to pick me up when I'm having a hard day.

I heard this CD promoted on NPR when Allen Toussaint was on Song Travels. He's a talented singer-songwriter and this CD would be a great addition to your music collection.
