5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful Poetry, June 23, 2011
This review is from: Songmaker: Poems (Hardcover)
Songmaker is a wonderful collection of poems by Christine Tsen. It is her second collection published in the past year and draws from the events and emotions in her life. This collection shows Tsen to be a promising poet. Her style is more refined in this collection than the previous one, although her use of metaphors continues to draw from an eclectic range of references. The poems in Songmaker are at once deeply personal and yet will resonate with those who have traveled a similar journey. In Mammogram, she describes the anxiety associated with her struggles with breast cancer and the kinship she develops with others who are in the same situation. In Tuscany, she describes with vivid imagery the hopes, joys, and frustrations of a young girl very much in love. And in Boogaloo, she recounts the bonding she has with her young son as she mingles her love of music with his love of dance.

Several of the poems contain inside and esoteric references that add to the meaning of the poems once they are understood. A good example of this is the poem, Playing Love. On the surface, it is about a street musician playing his music for the passersby who are too distracted to take notice. Once it is understood that this musician is Joshua Bell (there are clues) and the passersby are enjoying a concert for free in the Washington Metro that others have paid over a hundred of dollars for just a few blocks away, the poem's full meaning becomes apparent.

I highly recommend Songmaker to those who are looking for a book of poetry to simply enjoy. The poems are heartfelt, sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, and always with a genuine voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passion, May 31, 2011
This review is from: Songmaker: Poems (Hardcover)
Christine Tsen is just amazing.
Her musical talent would be enough for anyone who hoped to make a contribution to the arts, but her talent also extends to poetry.
"Songmaker" like "Ivory Flame Ascension" is a collection of poetry that gives us more of the fire in this incredible lady. Her passion for romance, music, nature, and connections through all human feelings comes shining through in poetry which is uniquely hers.
I highly recommend this beautiful book of poetry. It is best received by those familiar with the finer things in life, and for them it will be among the finest.
