Why is it so difficult to find good compilations by songwriters? While the fame and glamour go to the people who sang the songs, some respect is well overdue for the backroom boys and girls who wrote them. Afterall compilations by artists are two a penny. Although there are some excellent collections of the works of David-Bacharach and Jimmy Webb, where are the decent compilations from Goffin-King, Mann-Weil, Barry-Greenberg, Leiber-Stoller or Lamont-Dozier-Lamont? Well until some enterprising reord label discovers this vacant niche in the market, this collection will have to do. It is an excellent collection of songs from some of the best songwriters that ever tinkled the ivories in New York's overcrowded Brill Building. It includes some absolute gems written by Doc Pomus, Leiber-Stoller, Goffin-King, Barry-Greenwich and several others. The versions are all originals and an excellent choice of tracks has been made. My only complaint it that there is only one song by Mann & Weil - On Broadway which they co-wrote with Leiber-Stoller...oh, and a few more liner notes wouldn't go amiss. Otherwise this is a pretty comprehensive collection and a joy to listen to. For a double cd, it's cheap at the price so don't miss it!
