5.0 out of 5 stars Sequel almost as good as the first
Any fan knows that a greatest hits project never includes all of an artist's truly great songs. This is also the case with Rich Mullins. While his first best of, Songs, includes the cream of the crop, there were still many great songs omitted due to space.

This CD, released two years after his death, seeks to remedy the problem by including 16 more of his best songs...

1.0 out of 5 stars Completely redundant, shamelessly capitalizing on his untimely death
While "Songs" could be forgiven as a contractual obligation to the record label (the typical filler album of "greatest hits," plus at least one previously unreleased track to get longtime fans to buy it), "Songs 2" was released posthumously in an attempt to rake in the money before Rich faded from memory (cynical, I know, but don't forget that the Christian music industry...

Any fan knows that a greatest hits project never includes all of an artist's truly great songs. This is also the case with Rich Mullins. While his first best of, Songs, includes the cream of the crop, there were still many great songs omitted due to space.

This CD, released two years after his death, seeks to remedy the problem by including 16 more of his best songs. And some of the songs I missed from the first effort are here. "I See You," "Here in America," "Peace," and "Be with You" are examples of these songs. And I simply can't believe that "Growing Young" was overlooked the first time around. This powerful song of repentance is one of my favorites from Rich.

This CD doesn't inspire quite the same "must have" as the original did, however. Some of the songs, while still good, just aren't as classic the ones included on Songs.

Any fan of Rich Mullins, die-hard or casual, will want to get this to complete their collections. While not as good as the first, it's still a great collection that showcases Rich's wonderful work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting CD! THE BEST of Rich Mullins, December 3, 1999

I was just missing Rich's music when I happened across this CD in a local bookstore. I was so excited to find this, as it has all my favorite "Rich" songs on it. It made me not miss him so much. His music is powerful and beautiful. The lyrics are biblically based, and make you think. Rich Mullins was one of those rare musicians whose songs have brought so much to other people's lives. This CD is worshipful, rejuvenating, and powerful. Fabulous music from a man who gave us so much! Miss ya like crazy, Rich. Thanks for these "SONGS!"

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Writer in CCM, March 18, 2003
This review is from: Songs 2 (Audio CD)
I prefer Songs (the first greatest hits), but that's not to say that this CD isn't as brilliant. Rich lived a life that mirrored his music. He wasn't in CCM for the money, unlike a lot of artists, and he didn't settle for sounding like everyone else or following the current trends in culture. He made music that was inspired by God, came from his heart, and went directly to Your own. It's a discredit to offer a review, when his music says it all. I miss him...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good collection, November 22, 1999

This is a very good companion collection to the original "Songs" of Rich Mullins' music. Some of my favorites of his songs--such as "Where You Are" and "Hope to Carry On"--that Songs wanted for are included, as well as some songs that I hadn't yet heard, even with a near-complete collection of his CDs. There are some minor detractions--I would have liked to see some biographical information in the insert; the changing font sizes in the lyrics look a little funny; and I'm slightly disappointed that "The Color Green" didn't make it--but these don't really take away much from the overall enjoyment of the CD, and certainly doesn't bring it below a full five-star rating. Rich was certainly one of the most gifted Christian songwriters of his time.

This ties in with Songs 1 through the Step by Step refrain. Each song is full of the gospel's text, and filled with the gospel's Spirit. God truly blessed us with this man, and I get everything I can from his life and career.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Ageless Treasure, December 25, 1999
This review is from: Songs 2 (Audio CD)
How much I miss Rich Mullins in life remains the same. Yet through this collection of songs I am suspended timelessly in those moments where I was when I first heard each song and how it changed my life in ways I am still finding. Unlike anyone I have heard thus far, he had a way of taking simple words and transforming them into powerful statements of truth and grace then placing them to beautiful music so each song danced through my heart long after it was heard and still does. It is because of his music, I understand God's love is a whole new way. If you want to be inspired, this ageless treasure does not end when the music stops, it lives on as he does in his music.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome!, July 22, 2001
This review is from: Songs 2 (Audio CD)
This is the first time I've purchased a Rich Mullins CD. I'm so glad I did! I know this will not remain the only collection of his songs in my library. I only listened to this CD one time and I'm hooked already. Each song speaks to my heart and relates to my life. I love the variety of musical styles and instruments. The harmonies and rhythms are catchy yet challenging. I would recommend this collection to anyone who loves to worship in style. Rich's love for God and gift for praise will live on!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Peeking in my window, October 31, 2000

Rich's songs speak to me. They touch my heart and soul. It's almost as if He's peeking in my window, seeing my world, knowing what's going on. He sings about my life, about my faith. God speaks to me too, but I don't often understand or even listen to what He's trying to say. Rich was a voice for my Lord, singing to me in real human terms, exactly what I need. He has narrowed the gap between me and everlasting life. I thank the Lord for him. I know that heaven is filled with his beautiful music, and I look forward to meeting him there.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of Rich's Best, October 11, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Songs 2 (Audio CD)
If the album "Songs" is a bouquet of flaming roses full of love and zeal for God, then "Songs 2" is a bundle of pure lilies, raw with the experience of God, intimate, personal, exploring.

If "Songs" reminds me of a pair of wings taking flight and soaring in the sky, then "Songs2" reminds a string of footprints, filled with struggles, tears, and His grace.

I love Rich Mullins' songs, although I would not qualify him as a professional singer, no, not at all. I would rather call him a prophet - biting and brutally honest, a poet - sensitive and uniquely expressive, and a musician - raw and soulful like the lungs that have just taken in a deep breath of Irish country air. Rich does not sing with a smooth vibrato, but with a vibrating soul and a beating heart. And the best (most important) part of this whole thing is: his songs bless. I am so repeatedly reminded of God's love, and challenged by his devotion that I can fall more in love with God and with Rich's songs at the same time. Don't misunderstand me: as Rich says, there are songs higher than he can sing. Nothing but His Word stands forever.
