5.0 out of 5 stars The previous reviewer needs some extreme therapy
Ignore the previous review, for it must have been written by a momma's boy mad that he was finally weaned. This album is not a corporate rock whatever that baby boy called it. It contains songs that are better than anything a Minnesota band has produced since the Jayhawks. Protein is a California band with a love for some old-school hard rock, and they are fun. The...

1.0 out of 5 stars HA HA! THIS CD SUCKS! YEP!
Yay! Crappy no talents pushed into pseudo stardom by money hungry recording industry bandits! Don't listen to the five star reviews, kids, because almost NO ONE reviews a CD unless they love it, and there are always one or two freaks out there. So listen to ME, instead, a normal music listener with some sense in his head. I got this damn CD FREE as a PROMO, and I...

The "corporate" push may not work, but that matters none, because they seem to know it already, and have produced an album that I will listen to for a long time. Ignore the bitter, and listen to the music. I recommend "Sleeping on the Roof of a Mexican Restaurant." Cause, if you're out of luck, and no one gives a f**k, I can sympathize.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative Guitar Rock lives on!, September 10, 1999

This review is from: Songs About Cowgirls (Audio CD)
I saw these guys open up for King's X in Columbus, Ohio and was totally blown away. Thinking they were another local band, we didn't really care until Josh Zee (singer/guitarist) let loose. Amazing player! I agree that their stage show lacked a little, but I think that is because of 'opening-band syndrome'; the soundman sucked. Get this disk now!

5.0 out of 5 stars PROTEIN, January 6, 2009

This is the second of the only two albums released by this band ("Ever Since I Was A Kid" and "Songs About Cowgirls"). The PROTEIN cd's are simple rock and roll at its very best, with a few hints of the country-rock genre that Josh Zee (guitar, vocals) would eventually turn to with The Mother Truckers. Don't confuse simple with boring - this stuff is nowhere near boring. Josh knows how to write a hook and the PROTEIN songs are loaded with them. High brow this ain't, but the lyrics are witty and cynical and the musicianship of the three piece band is top shelf. Josh is a true master of the electric guitar - certainly one of the most interesting and dynamic players going today. PROTEIN is entirely unique but you may notice elements of early Toadies and Smashing Pumpkins backed by Angus Young with a little Frank Zappa and Chet Atkins occasionally tossed into the mix for style and texture. If you like the rockin' side of The Mother Truckers, or already have the first PROTEIN release and like it, this one is a safe bet - and arguably even quirkier than the first. Complete your PROTEIN collection while you can still pick up these gems on-line, and at least at the time of this review, at serious discounts. I saw these guys open for Mike Keneally's Beer for Dolphins in Seattle. We get used to crappy opening acts, so this was doubly unusual. They combine tight arrangements of goofy song concepts with an outstanding guitar player wringing magic from his strat. The virtuosity is not blatant, there is not much noodling going on. About the fifth time you listen to this disk, you're going to get slammed upside the head with how cool and fluid these guys are. Honestly, this record is quite brilliant in its own silly and powerful way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and can play too!, August 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs About Cowgirls (Audio CD)
I saw these guys back up King's X in Portland, OR, and was ready to skip them. I am glad that I did see them. They are very good. The CD is as exciting as their live show. I thought the CD would be a bad watered down version of the raw live show. Not so, they are as amusing and fresh as live.

It was nice to see a three piece put out such a large sound without resorting to much in the way of effects, just skill. It was nice to see that the guys could play too. The first thought I had when they opened was, oh great another Greenday. Then the guitarist let rip. The band also ripped some country tinged stuff, and a little jazz flavoured stuff. All in all a great find!

I just saw Protein at a small venue last night and they were amazingly fun and right then I knew I had to get the cd. The singer has a great voice and the sound is fresh. I highly recommend the album as well as seeing these guys live. They're fantastic and fun.

Protein is amazing....coming from the bay area and seeing Protein since they started, I must say these guys are one of the all around great bands out there. The new "Songs for Cowgirls" CD is absolutely fantastic, with songs like.. "Lemonade", "Mexican Rooftop", and "Over My Dead Body"...there sure to get serious recognition (and well-deserved!)...they have their own "sound" that mixes elements of rock/metal/coutry & pop all together, and they do it well! Don't miss them live either, they are really in there element here...I think Songs for Cowgirls should get 10 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Songs About Cowgirls" is THE summer album of 1999, July 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Songs About Cowgirls (Audio CD)
I liked Protein's first album, but nothing prepared me for "Cowgirls." It is, quite simply, one of the best albums I've heard in the last few years. The style and songwriting have evolved, while the musicianship remains very impressive. This is a CD that will play well at any festive occasion- not one song makes you want to hit the skip button, which is rare for an album today. "Going to LA" will make it's way onto every mixed tape I make for some time to come. The best description I can come up the songs on this album is: Hank Williams Sr. meets the Replacements and decide to redirect the 'California' rock sound.
