I take private voice lessons from Kathie Kelton and she is amazing! She brings Amy Beach's music to life! I strongly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys listening to classical and operatic music. The music is so beautiful it will give you chills! Fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest songs in classical music July 24, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Even though I really enjoyed the other Naxos Beach CD, I was surprprised by how many chills and tears I experienced in this collection of songs. Beach has a way of perfectly expressing the lyrics which are mainly poems and are included in the CD liner notes. As a whole the songs express Beach's compositional skills and her personal life. The songs contain several lullabies and poems about death. They are perfectly performed by the the mezzo and piano . Please buy these songs they do rise to the level of schumann ans Shubert.
Please excuse typos I have a neurologic disease.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music March 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In my opinion, this CD is very well performed. Amy Beach's music is delightful and poignant with moments of sheer beauty. I bought this CD for a graduate music class on Art Song because I wanted to research a composer unfamiliar to me. I was absolutely delighted with my new find and look forward to learning more of Beach's music. Katherine Kelton's voice and Catherine Bringerud's piano skills make a wonderful duo, very musical. I am very pleased with my purchase and look forward to sharing it with my students.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting collection … and worth a listen. November 24, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
While I'm not wild about sopranos … at least this one is a mezzo. The songs are delightful and full of fun. My CD came with a booklet that had the words in it, which was helpful, although Ms. Kelton's enunciation was very good. A worthwhile addition to your collection if you are interested in Ms. Beach.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Collection of Multilingual Art Songs November 21, 2013
By Limey
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Amy Beach (1867-1944) was an American composer, born in New Hampshire. She is often known as Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, since she married Dr. H.H.A. Beach in 1885. She composed a wide variety of music, including choral and orchestral works, and enjoyed widespread recognition and success. The album - titled simply “Amy Beach: Songs” - is a collection of high-quality art songs (songs for poems), for which she was particularly famous. I must confess up front that my review is biased: I adore art music and I was certainly not disappointed by this album. It sets to lovely music poems by well-known poets such as Longfellow, Shelley, Burns, Browning and Thomas Dekker; as well as poems by her husband and herself, among others. Admittedly, the choice of poems is odd, sometimes obscure and pedestrian, but Mrs. Beach has a real gift of setting them to music and the performers interpret them well, so that they all work, albeit to varying degrees. This collection of 36 songs from her large repertoire has a considerable variety in terms of theme, mood and language. It opens with the gorgeous introspective “Rainy Day”; several are pleasantly romantic (such as “Ah, Love, but a day!”, “Ich sagte nicht” and “Je demande à l’oiseau”), if somewhat dated in some cases; there are three charming lullabies (notably “Baby”) and the unexpected (but delightful) humorous ditty “Candy Lion”; a couple of very good Scottish songs are based on poems by Robert Burns along with the wondrous “simulated” Scottish folk song “Shena Van”; a number are sung in French and German; and the program ends with two competent religious pieces.
