Samples All Six of the Bluegrass Album Band's Releases,
By
This review is from: The Songs of Bill Monroe (Audio CD)
Although not intended as a tribute to the father of bluegrass music, this collection of Bill Monroe-penned songs by the Bluegrass Album Band was released just weeks before Monroe's death in 1996. This bluegrass supergroup speerheaded by J.D. Crowe (banjo), Tony Rice (Guitar, vocals) and Doyle Lawson (mandolin, vocals) runs through a dozen of Monroe's best known songs like "Molly & Tenbrooks," "Toy Heart," and instrumentals like "Cheyenne," "Lonesome Moonlight Waltz" and "Brown County Breakdown."Unlike the EasyDisc release of Flatt & Scruggs material, this disc features songs from all six the the Bluegrass Album Band's releases. Although it does leave off an additional six Monroe songs from those albums. And with a running time of just under 24 minutes, it would have been nice to have also included tracks like "Wheel Hoss" from vol. VI and "Along About Daybreak" from vol. V. But at a budget price, you're getting a terrific sampling of some fine bluegrass music by some of the genre's best pickers.

Very good bluegrass for very little money,

This review is from: The Songs of Bill Monroe (Audio CD)
This is really a fun bluegrass album from a great bluegrass band. Although its not the most creative work done by artists like Tony Rice and J.D. Crowe, it's still a great example of what the famous Bluegrass Album Band can do.
