Wonderful!,

As a cat lover, I found this compilation of poems/songs wholly accurate and entertaining. I loaned the tape to my mother who, in turn, loaned it to may aunt, who loaned it on, etc. I miss it! Therefore, I have found my way to Amazon for the sole purpose of obtaining another copy!

Don't own a cat, but this is a musical and 'cat' gem. Wonderful, original lyrics by Garrison to classical and popular tunes. About 16 cat songs sung by Garrison and Frederica with chorus and superb orchestra and orchestrations. Excellent sound quality, lots of fun.

Anyone who has a cat, likes cats, or who wants to know more about cats should get this CD. Even if you hate cats, I think you will enjoy this CD. I have 2 of these Songs of the Cat CDs in case something happens to one of them...

Is There a Cat in Your Life?,
By tjcrewsbooks (Indiana) - See all my reviews

The songs here run the spectrum of how we relate to cats. There are songs about lazy cats, fat cats, noisy cats, selfish, self-centered cats, calculating, mean, and opportunistic cats, picky-eater cats, cats who want inside/outside, and scratch-on-the-door cats. So why is "Songs of the Cat" a good thing? Because when you can't live with cats, and you can't live without them--it helps to sing about them, and all the good and the bad things about cats seem bearable. Many of these songs are unsentimental, which is, I believe, as it should be.

How abridged is it?,

Five star rating (maybe):Since tracks are not listed in the product description, we don't know what got left out. I have an unabridged version, which I heartily recommend. All songs are little gems ranging from humorous to sentimental to serious. Can't imagine editing any of them out. These songs are just plain fun. All are suitable for adults' as well as children's enjoyment. I like to sing along when I'm driving on the freeway.

I came across the "In & Out Cat Song" on You Tube, and thought it very clever, so I went to Amazon an bought the CD. I understand music likes and dislikes are subjective, so I have to qualify my criticism as "my Opinion"...which is:The lyrics are mostly clever, but the "operatic" interpretations got old before the first song was finished...and the 'stilited' vocal renditions continue throughout the album. I remember when "The Cat Came Back" was a country music hit (1950's??), but did not remember how cruel it was...I guarantee it won't get much play today, what with the Animal Rights awareness we now have. The Johny cash song was clever, but not enough to 'carry' the rest of the album. I gave the CD away to a friend who loves acts. I explained I did not care for the renditions, but I left that up to her. I'm sure there are those who will enjoy it immensely....I did not.

I was really excited when I read about this CD and ordered it, along with another CD about cats: Whiskers in the Jar (mp3).Had I listened to Songs of the Cat first, I probably would have enjoyed it more. But I listened to Whiskers in the Jar first. If you like Garrison Kiellor, you'll love this CD. If you like operatic/art songs, you'll like this CD. If you like cats, you'll probably like this CD. I would have to say, though, that I recommend Whiskers in the Jar over Songs of the Cat as being great music (celtic) with great lyrics about cats. It's probably a matter of preferences, though.

"Songs of the Cat" Is a Lot of Fun!,
By
This review is from: Songs of the Cat (Audio CD)
This CD is a great tongue-in-cheek re-write of some famous and not-so-famous music, from classical to western and lots in between. The word plays and send-ups are hilarious, with excellent orchestration and voices. von Strade obviously enjoyed herself, and Keillor evinced his usual sincere not-so-straightforward persona. It may not be great music, but it's great fun for folks who love their cats (or other people's) but don't take them too seriously.

If you love cats or have a sense of humour you will love these songs. I wasn't too keen on the first one (The cat came Back) as the owner was a bit drastic. The song My Grandmothers cat, who is spoilt rotten, contains a bit of advice for all pet owners. Other songs that reflect the whims and fancies of my own cat abound. e.g. I wanna go out. Some of the cat stories are parodies of some of the popular songs of the 50's and 60's and also a delightful use of some famous classics in the story of the dog and cat. I can really recommend this CD. It is a laught. My Friends all demand to listen it in my car and think it is great. |
