Songs for Christmas Eddie Fisher and Frankie Laine CD review,
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Songs for Christmas (Audio CD)
Eddie Fisher had a tremendous command of whatever he sang and the holiday songs on this album are no exception. There isn't a bad track in the lot--period; and we can hear how wide Eddie's vocal range truly was on these fine recordings. I'm not completely sure why we get two bonus tracks by Frankie Laine instead of Eddie Fisher; but Frankie sings well, too. Both men had very sophisticated phrasing and a fine sense of timing and neither one of them ever let go of a single superfluous note! In addition, the quality of the sound on this CD is quite good.
The album opens with Eddie Fisher doing an excellent job of singing "You're All I Want for Christmas;" the background chorus harmonizes nicely even though Eddie never really needed backup--his talent carried him through every time. "Here Comes Santa Claus" has Eddie singing very well; the percussion and the strings are used to great advantage and Eddie really opens up to make this extra special and full of joy. "Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep)" is very well done--I love it--this ballad is beautiful in Eddie's more than capable hands. Eddie Fisher also performs a sublime rendition of "White Christmas;" this is certainly more than good enough to make Bing Crosby proud! The arrangement is thoughtfully done and the music fits in perfectly with Eddie's vocals. "Silent Night" is very nicely done although the bell could have been rung just a little bit softer; and listen for another great performance from Eddie on "Christmas Day" with a background chorus; a most spirited treatment of "Jingle Bells;" the poignant "That's What Christmas Means to Me" as Eddie sings this with all his heart and soul; a stunning rendition of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" that I won't forget anytime soon and "Christmas Eve in My Hometown" which Eddie performs with panache. The two bonus tracks feature Frankie Laine; and this is a nice bonus although as I mentioned above I wonder why they didn't add more Eddie Fisher music instead. "Merry Christmas Everywhere" is easy on the ear; Frankie does this with a great deal of style and that's grand. Frankie also does a great job on "May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You," too. All in all, this is a wonderful CD for any fan of Eddie Fisher; and although this is apparently out of print as of the time I am writing this maybe that will change with continued sales of this CD. Frankie Laine fans may also enjoy this album.

Fabulous 1950's Christmas 'Crooner' Masterpiece,
By rodney wiltin "christmas man" (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Songs for Christmas (Audio CD)
This cd is an album by EDDIE FISHER which was recorded and/or released in the mid 1950's (with the exception of the last two songs which are from FRANKIE LAINE and they are similar to EDDIE FISHER but not 100% as great). And what a beautiful masterpiece of christmas music this EDDIE FISHER christmas cd is.
This cd is very much in the same style as BING CROSBY, PERRY COMO, FRANK SINATRA, DEAN MARTIN, etc.....but it also has it's own flavor in it. EDDIE FISHER can sing with the best of them which includes the four named just above. The backing orchestra and chorus really deserve special mention here since they are both so powerful and help create that wonder christmas mood. And every single song is fantastic so you can play it from start to end with full 'christmas' enjoyment. As just mentioned above, it's hard to pick favorites since they're all so nice but the opening track, YOU'RE ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS is wonderful and sets a christmas mood nicely. HERE COMES SANTA CLAUS and JINGLE BELLS are very upbeat and christmasy with the backing chorus shining. In fact, all three songs mentioned thus far may be in the running for my favorite version of each of them. WHITE CHRISTMAS holds it's own with BING'S version which is saying alot and I will even go as far as saying that I may even like EDDIE FISHER'S version more. CHRISTMAS EVE IN MY HOMETOWN is fabulous with a deep christmas atmosphere in it. I can go on and on because as mentioned earlier, every song is great and this is such a worthy christmas cd to own. It's easily one of my favorites and this is out of hundreds of christmas cd's I own. Completely recommended. |
