Silber divides the book into chapters by topic, and starts each chapter with a good explanation of the history behind the songs that follow. His interpretation really enhances the book and shows the significance that music played during this critical period in U.S. History. Two big thumbs up!!!

As a kid my Mother had a little book of songs for the piano most of which were Civil War songs and WW1 songs. I was trying to find some of those and did. This is a lovely collection with a lot more explanation than I really needed, and maybe someday I will actually be good enough to play some of them. Disregarding my pathetic attempts at playing the piano, I am looking forward to using this book in the near future. It has many of the songs that I remember.

This volume of music is good in the sense that it has quite a large number of the popular War Between the States songs. I found the arrangements to be overly simplistic, which as an accomplished pianist I found to be quite boring. However, it does have value in that the book contains many songs of the era and in a format where anybody can learn them.
